Women's Center Student Organization's 4 Pillars of Expectations
The following student groups are advised by the Program Advisor of Women's Programming and meet at the Center.
Women's Interest Network
(WIN) provides a voice for women's interests and concerns on campus by
sponsoring programs designed to stimulate conversation and action. Each February
WIN coordinates a benefit performance of The Vagina Monologues that raises money
for a local domestic violence shelter. WIN consists of several sub-committees
such as Take Back the Night and a Men's subgroup.
Spectrum seeks to create a
forum in which gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender students and their supporters
can come together in a non-threatening environment to speak openly about their
concerns. Through programming which addresses stereotypical images and
misconceptions, Spectrum provides educational opportunities for its members and
the SMU community.
YWCA@SMU works towards the goal of
empowering women and eliminating racism everywhere. They do this both by
providing a space to talk about this intersection and also by looking at ways to
encourage bystanders to intervene as a way of eliminating racism an sexism
through theater.
Women in Science and
Engineering (WISE) through its middle-school mentoring program provides
positive role models and hands-on learning opportunities in the fields of
science, mathematics, and engineering. WISE offers its members leadership and
helps connect the Women in Science and Engineering students at SMU.
CORE is the name of
our student advisory committee coordinating our Women's Symposium. This group is
aptly named, as students are at the very core of our Women's Symposium, choosing
speakers, preparing workshops, and coordinating marketing campaigns. The Women's
Symposium has been serving the SMU community since 1966 and is, thus, one of
SMU's oldest and most honored traditions.
Graduate Women's Organization (GWO) is dedicated to promoting opportunities for interdisciplinary academic and professional development and networking for SMU's female graduate students. The GWO aims to improve the academic environment and provide social support for women engaged in graduate and postgraduate work at SMU.
