Director of the Women's Center

Welcome to the Women’s Center!  We’re glad that you’ve found us here on the Web.  I had great plans at the beginning of August to write a welcome back letter to everyone as we start another school year.  …and look what happened, without blinking the start of school rushed by and we are nearly into October.  We’ve had a busy start to the semester here at the Women’s Center.  Firstly, and most importantly, we have welcomed a new staff member!  Maria Walker joined us at the end of August and is serving as our program advisor.  In this capacity she is directly responsible for advising our student organizations.  She has been busy learning the ropes and meeting with students.  Her door is always open (except of course, when it’s closed) and she welcomes meeting the SMU community.  If you haven’t had a chance yet, please do stop by and say hello!

We have been busy in other ways, too.  In August we hosted our annual sexual assault awareness program.  This year we brought the program “Let’s Talk About It” to campus and had over 1100 people attend.  We also hosted a party on the lawn in support of Women’s athletics.  We have so many amazing women athletes on this campus and the Women’s Center is proud to honor them and encourage the SMU community to go out and support their games!

Coming up soon, we’ll be celebrating Love Your Body Day, National Coming Out Day, National Family Violence Awareness month and more.  We’re also busily preparing for our 43rd Annual Women’s Symposium here on February 28, 2008.  We hope to see you at our events, or even just hanging out here in the Women’s Center.  I hope you enjoy the fall!

 Karen
