Web Styleguide

Using Dreamweaver with the SMU Template

This guide was developed for Dreamweaver MX on the Macintosh. Dreamweaver MX for the PC is very similar, though some of the terminology may differ slightly.

To use the new SMU template, you must use Dreamweaver MX. Earlier versions do not fully support XHTML, on which the SMU template is based. Dreamweaver MX is available at an educational discount through JourneyEd or Micro/MacWarehouse.

Dreamweaver differs from FrontPage in many ways, including the fact that when you edit pages in Dreamweaver, you are working on a copy of the page on your own computer, which you then upload to the server. When using FrontPage, you are editing the actual file on the server.

In this section are some basic guidelines to follow when using Dreamweaver with the SMU template. We realize that people have many different levels of comfort and ability with Dreamweaver, so this guide was written with the "average" user in mind -- someone who has basic experience, knows how to set up a site and do basic text and image placement, and has a decent comfort level with the program.

We strongly suggest that you also sign up for the campus Dreamweaver support mailing list.
