GENERAL (division) RECITALS: For all voice students at the sophomore level and above, a solo or General Recital performance is required each semester of study. An on-campus master class performance may substitute for the general recital requirement. All recital, opera, and master class programs must be attached to the final repertoire sheets at the end of each semester.
DEGREE-REQUIRED RECITALS:
1. Required recitals must be performed on campus.
2. The recital program must be submitted -- copy ready -- to the Music Division Office two weeks prior to the recital. It is the student's responsibility to reproduce the notes and translations for his/her recital.
3. At the beginning of the semester, the student is responsible for obtaining a committee to evaluate his/her recital.
4. The proposed recital program with four copies of required program, notes and translations must be submitted-- copy ready -- to the four full-time voice faculty at the recital hearing. Translations are required of all students. Program notes are required of Master and Artist Certificate students and suggested at the senior level. Scholarly program notes are required of MM Voice Performance students as part of the graduate comprehensive review. Please refer to the GCR for details. If a voice hearing is delayed or waived, the program and translations/notes must be delivered, in an envelope, to each full-time faculty member's studio on or before the day and time that the hearing was originally scheduled.
5. All required recitals are preceded by a recital hearing (see note*) to determine whether the student will be allowed to present the recital. Hearings are normally scheduled for Wednesdays between 1:00 and 2:00 PM. Students should reserve that time on their schedules. The recital hearing will be set by the Chair of the Voice Department approximately three weeks (see note*) before the recital. It is the responsibility of the student to notify the Head of the Voice Department of class conflicts with the scheduled hearing. Following the hearing, the student will be notified of how to proceed. Failure to pass the hearing will result in cancellation of the recital date.
6. Encores are not permitted.
7. If more than 50% (duration) of the recital repertoire was offered at the jury the semester before a recital, an additional four selections will be required at the jury in the semester of the recital.
8. Considering modern performance practices, with the instructor's approval, a student may perform one chamber work or one modern work with score.
JUNIOR RECITALS: Must be presented by Performance majors in the junior year. This recital should be approximately 1/2 hour total length (25 minutes of music) and must include a minimum of three languages. A pre-recital hearing* before the Voice faculty is required. Complete printed material for the recital is required at the hearing. With the exception of arias from the 17th and 18th centuries, students are restricted to one operatic aria or musical theater selection.
SENIOR RECITALS: Must be presented by performance majors in the senior year. This recital should be approximately one hour total length (45-50 minutes of music) and must include a minimum of four languages. A pre-recital hearing* before the Voice faculty is required. Complete printed material for the recital is required at the hearing. Opera repertoire after the 18th century must be limited to one aria. Students must receive permission from their teacher of record to include operatic or musical theatre ensembles (not to exceed ten minutes).
GRADUATE RECITALS: A recital must be presented by graduate Performance Majors. This graduate recital should be approximately one hour total length (45-50 minutes of music) and must include a minimum of four languages. A pre-recital hearing* before the Voice faculty is required. Complete printed material for the recital is required at the hearing. Scholarly program notes are required of MM Voice Performance students as part of graduate comprehensive review. Please refer to the GCR for details. Opera repertoire after the 18th century must be limited to one aria. Students must receive permission from their teacher of record to include operatic or musical theatre ensembles (not to exceed fifteen minutes).
PERFORMANCE
DIPLOMA RECITALS: Recitals include three public
performances on campus, two of which must be solo recitals
approximately one hour in total length. The three recitals will
be graded by a committee of three faculty members. A
pre-recital hearing* before the Voice faculty is required. Complete
printed material for the recital is
required at the hearing.
1st
Recital - a memorized
recital which must include a minimum of four
languages.
Opera
repertoire after the 18th century must be limited to one aria.
Students
must receive permission from their teacher of record to include
operatic or
jjmusical theatre ensembles (not to exceed fifteen minutes).
2nd Recital - not less

(approximately 35 minutes) should be chamber music.
ELECTIVE RECITALS:
Students must provide a printed program. A pre-recital hearing
may be
given in lieu of a jury if :
1) the recital has been approved at a hearing* and
2) at least 50% of the repertoire is assigned in that semester.
If the student chooses not to do
a pre-recital hearing, he/she must sing a jury exam.
For elective recitals,
the policy
of evaluation by a recital committee will be in effect (as of fall
2003),
as follows:
it will apply to students who
choose to give an elective recital instead of a jury;
it assumes that the recital
repertoire covers the singer (or singers’) repertoire requirement(s)
for the semester concerned,
and that the
singer(s) are in a degree program but have not yet finished their
degree.
* Not less than 3/4
of the recital material must be performed from memory at the hearing.
Please indicate songs/arias not memorized by and asterisk (*). If a
hearing is delayed to less than three weeks before the recital, all
repertoire must be sung at performance level: all music memorized,
unless a chamber work is
included (see 6).
