Jury/Repertoire Guidelines

FRESHMAN VOICE STUDENTS:  Four songs must be memorized each semester.  Two additional songs must be studied but not necessarily memorized.  English and Italian Art Songs must be included.  Performance degree admission depends upon the outcome of the first-semester jury.

SOPHOMORE VOICE STUDENTS:  Six songs must be memorized each semester.  Two additional songs must be studied but not necessarily memorized.  German and/or French Songs must be added to the English and Italian repertoire.  General Recital performance is required each semester.

JUNIOR VOICE PERFORMANCE MAJORS:  Eight songs must be memorized each semester.  Two additional songs must be studied but not necessarily memorized.  Repertoire must include English, Italian, German, and French.  Other languages may be substituted.  A Junior Recital of 30 minutes is required (see Recital Requirements).  A solo or General Recital performance is required each semester.

JUNIORS - ALL OTHER DEGREES:  Six songs must be memorized each semester.  Two additional songs must be studied but not necessarily memorized.  Repertoire is at the discretion of the applied teacher and must include English and at least one other language.  Students must sing on general recital each semester.

SENIOR VOICE PERFORMANCE MAJORS:  Eight to ten songs must be memorized each semester.  At least four languages must be represented.  A Senior Recital of one hour is required (see Recital Requirements).  A solo or General Recital performance is required each semester.

SENIORS - ALL OTHER DEGREES:  Eight songs must be memorized each semester.  Two additional songs must be studied but not necessarily memorized.  At least three languages must be represented.  Students must present  one General Recital performance each semester of study.

GRADUATE VOICE PERFORMANCE MAJORS:Eight to ten songs must be memorized each semester.  At least four languages must be represented.  A Graduate Recital one hour in length is required, usually in the last semester of study (see Recital Requirements).  A solo recital or general recital performance is required each semester.  No more than half of the required repertoire in each semester may be operatic arias.

GRADUATE VOICE CONCENTRATIONS:  Eight songs must be memorized each semester, with some additional repertoire studied.  At least three languages must be represented.  A solo recital or general recital performance is required each semester.

NOTES:
1.  For students taking half-hour lessons (3100 or 6100 for 1 credit) repertoire requirements are half of those stated above, with a minimum of four songs each semester.

2.  Students may offer one musical theatre piece.  Other exceptions to repertoire requirements may be petitioned by the student to the applied teacher, who will present the request to the Voice Department for approval at least four weeks prior to the jury.

3. Opera repertoire performed at SMU may be included on the jury list for a maximum of one song, at the discretion of the applied teacher.  Roles in operas performed at SMU may substitute for required repertoire, based on determinations made by the Voice Department Faculty.

4. All recital, opera, and master class programs must be attached to the final repertoire sheets at the end of each semester.

5. If more than 50% (duration) of the recital repertoire was offered at the jury the semester before a recital, an additional four selections will be required at the jury in the semester of the recital.

6. Considering modern performance practices, with the instructor's approval, one movement or one song from a larger chamber or orchestral work may be presented to the committee with score, counting as one jury selection.
