I. The Degree-Required Recital Hearing and Program
Notes
A.
Program Notes - Content
MM Voice Candidates
will prepare scholarly program notes for each work,
song or aria on their
degree-required recital.
The program notes
should cover the complete recital program and
must contain from 2500
to 4000 words, excluding translations.
The following issues
should be addressed:
1. Biography of
composers and poets or writers, where appropriate
2. Historical context, including current performance
practice
3. The interaction of words and music
B. Program
Notes –Policies
1. The Program notes
are due to the teacher of record on March first,
during spring semesters and
October first, during fall Semesters.
2. Candidates presenting recitals prior to March 14,
in the spring semester or
prior to October 14, in the fall
semester are required to give their program notes
to the teacher of record at least
three weeks prior to the hearing and
not later than three weeks prior
to the recital date.
3. The teacher of record will evaluate the program
notes first and
request any necessary
editing.
4. Edited program notes must be returned to the
teacher of record
at least two weeks prior to the
hearing. The teacher of record will then forward
edited program notes to the
remaining committee members.
5. Hearings will be cancelled if program notes are
not approved by all recital
committee menters one week prior
to the scheduled recital hearing.

Recital Hearing
Students will follow repertory
requirements, guidelines, and procedures
as outlined in the Voice Department online directions for the
recital hearing.
II. Candidate Interview
A. Each MM Voice
candidate will meet with the members of the voice and opera faculty
for a 30-minute exit
interview and discussion
concerning their
professional direction and development.
Each candidate will
present a résumé and head shot.
B. At least three of the five faculty members must be
present for this interview.
C. The exit interview will be scheduled by the chair
of voice.
D. A two-thirds majority is necessary to pass this
interview.
E. The faculty may ask the candidate to address some
of the following topics:
1. The candidate’s unique qualities,
strengths
2. Performance interests, i.e. opera, oratorio, early and/or
contemporary music, etc.
3. The candidate’s five-year plan for professional growth and
development through
the next
phase of their careers.
4. The candidate’s plan for marketing their talents
III. One retake of
section I. (The Degree-Required Recital Hearing and Program Notes) and
section II. (Candidate Interview) will be permitted within three
weeks
of the first attempt but not later than the last day of classes in that
semester.
If a second attempt is
failed, the candidate must petition
the Associate Director of Music to request a third attempt.
