Mentor Program

The Honors Mentor Program is designed to connect upper-class students to first-year students in the University Honors community. Honors Mentors serve as role models by providing peer advice about the University Honors Program and counsel on college life in general. Building relationships with first-year students helps to strengthen the Honors community and keep students actively involved over the course of their four years at SMU. The Mentor groups are designed to be small with between one and three first-year students and one upper-class mentor.

Mentors will join their first-year student groups at the Common Reading Book Discussion, the Honors Welcome Assembly and Barbeque, and the End of Year First-Year Dinner. Especially during Fall semester, Honors Mentors will be encouraged to meet informally with their groups to plan at least one activity or connect to an existing UHP outing. Throughout the year, there will be other opportunities for the groups to come together around identified needs and interests.
