Named in 1978 in honor of Dallas businessman Edwin L. Cox, the Cox School has a rich heritage as a partner with the business community. It all began in 1920 when, at the request of the Dallas business community, the Department of Commerce at SMU was established. In 1921 the Department was renamed the School of Commerce. In 1941, the Board of Trustees established the School of Commerce as a separate entity from the University, thereby creating the School of Business Administration.
The building that housed the original School of Business Administration was established in 1952 as the Joseph Wylie Fincher Memorial Building. It was joined in 1987 by the Cary M. Maguire Building and the Trammell Crow Building.
