Activities for Section 8: TENDENCY TONES AND MINOR SCALES

    1. Find several pieces that are in a minor key. Do this by listening to them, and also by use of the key signature. By identifying the accidentals present, determine which form of the minor scale these pieces use. (natural, harmonic, or melodic?) Which is the most common?
    2. Try to write out the natural minor scale for each key and play them. Now alter each one to be a harmonic minor scale and play first the natural form, then the harmonic form. Listen to the difference in each one.

    3. In the melodies that used a harmonic or melodic minor scale, identify all of the TENDENCY TONES. Do they resolve as expected?
    4. Try writing a melody of your own using the melodic minor scale form. Be sure to properly resolve all tendency tones. Play it for someone else and ask what mood it makes them feel.
