- Identify the general INTERVAL (i.e. 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.) between each note of several melodies from music that you are playing. Are certain intervals used more often than others? Which ones?
- Now, for each of the above intervals, count the number of half-steps and determine what the SPECIFIC INTERVAL is (i.e. a m2 or M2?)
- Play through the above melodies, listening to the intervals as you have labeled them. What are your favorite intervals?
- On a sheet of staff paper, write out several scales, then write a major third and a perfect fifth above them. This will help you to learn to read (recognize at sight) these intervals, and will aid in recognizing other closely related intervals.
- Pick three of your favorite intervals, and try writing a melody that only uses those three intervals. Remember: try moving up or down only by that interval.
