Activities for Section 5: MODES AND SCALES

    1. On a keyboard, try playing a MAJOR SCALE up one octave beginning on every pitch class. Use the pattern: W W H W W W H (W = whole step, or two keys away; H = half step, or the next key). Do they all sound similar? Now try the same on your instrument, or by singing on "la".

    2. Now try writing out several of the other modes -- aolean, dorian, etc. Play each and try to describe what mood or emotion they make you feel. (The ancient Greeks used music in specific modes to inspire different moods, jazz musicians today also use these modes in different pieces to create a mood or feel -- do they do the same for you?)

    3. In the music that you are playing/singing, find and identify any scale passages. Some of these might not be complete. Do any begin and end on TONIC?
