AREAS AND FIELDS OF STUDY

SMU offers both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Religious Studies. The Ph.D. program is designed to prepare persons for academic leadership and professional careers as teacher-scholars in schools, colleges, universities, and schools of theology. The M.A. degree is a terminal degree, ordinarily directed toward the nonprofessional student interested in advanced work in religious studies within the context of the liberal arts and sciences. Admission requirements are the same for either degree. Students interested in the Ph.D. should apply for that degree.

Ph.D. students focus their work in one of six specialized fields of study:

  • Systematic Theology

  • Religious Ethics

  • Hebrew Bible/Old Testament

  • New Testament

  • History of the Christian Tradition

  • Religion and Culture
