David Gergen, editor-at-large of U.S. News & World Report and
a regular on PBS' NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, has been an active participant
in American national life for more than a quarter century. An honors
graduate of both Yale University and Harvard Law School, he is a visiting
professor at Duke University and the author of a book on presidential
leadership in the late 20th century titled Eyewitness to Power: The
Essence of Leadership.
Gergen has served as a special adviser to four Presidents: Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Clinton. From 1984 to 1993, he worked mostly as a journalist and political analyst, teaming with Mark Shields for five years on The MacNeil-Lehrer NewsHour.
