SMU-IN-TAOS: GEOLOGY 1301

Earth Systems

Earth Sciences is an environmentally-oriented course that will examine the origin of the earth, its composition, structure, antiquity, and the processes that shape it. Using the available natural setting of northern New Mexico, we will study first-hand a variety of topics including minerals and mining, volcanism, rivers, deserts, ancient marine environments, glaciers, earthquakes and mountain-building, rifting continents, and other assorted topics. Laboratory exercises will be field-oriented. Day or half-day field excursions will take place within a 100-mile radius of campus, and will involve numerous hikes at elevations between 6,000 and 13,000 feet above sea level.
