University Honors Students at the SMU-in-Taos Campus

June Term, 2010

The following has been established for the June semester in Taos:

SCHOLARSHIPS:

The University Honors Program will provide 5 Richter Research Scholarships for Honors students who have completed one full year at SMU. These scholarships will pay $3,000 per student and will cover (more or less) all expenses beyond tuition. Students must take 6 hours to be eligible and thus would be responsible for the tuition costs of the second course beyond the Honors Research course. The Richter International Fellowship program is funded by the Paul K and Evelyn E. Cook Richter Memorial Funds and is awarded to members of the University Honors Program to conduct independent research.

Students must be registered for six hours in the June term at SMU-in-Taos.

The Taos office will award the Friends of Taos Scholarships for 5 students covering tuition for one 3-hour course. Students will be responsible for covering the tuition cost of their second course of study. Richter students will not be eligible to apply for Clements Scholarship funding.

The Taos office will appoint a Faculty member who will serve as instructor of record for these 5 students enrolled in the Honors Research independent study course.

REQUIREMENTS:

Students will design a research proposal within the field of Southwest studies, broadly defined, along with their application for Taos funding. The project may be in whatever viable field a student chooses. Proposals are evaluated based on the originality and merit of the topic, strength of the research methodology and the maturity and competency of each student. This proposal will be due on Friday, February 5, 2010 before 5 p.m. Application and proposal will be turned in to Dr. David Doyle, 109 Clements Hall.

Students must enlist a faculty mentor in the appropriate field of study who will supervise the project, advise on and review the initial project proposal, and read the final project due at the end of the summer.

Students must register and complete an "Honors Research Independent Study" course. This course will count toward a student’s honors cultural formation requirement and will carry an independent study course number.

Student applications must be approved by the Taos Richter Selection Committee comprised of professors and past Richter Fellows.

DURING THE TAOS SEMESTER IN JUNE:

  1. • Students will meet once per week together as a class.
  2. • Students will be at least once per week with the on-campus faculty instructor to supervise ongoing research and writing.
  3. • In the final week of the June term, students will present the initial findings of their research to the class and these discussions should be ongoing.
  4. • At the conclusion of the Taos June term, all students registered in the Research course will deliver a brief presentation on their work to the Honors class. Each student will turn in a rough draft of his/her final research project.

TO COMPLETE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE RICHTER FUNDS:

By the first day of classes for the Fall term, 23 August 2010, students will be required to turn in their final research project (if written, at least 20 pages typed, double-spaced). One copy goes to their original faculty sponsor and one copy to the University honors Program Director. Both faculty members must approve this final project for the student’s responsibility to be fulfilled.

Students awarded the fellowships will be asked to publicly present their research to the SMU campus in a venue to be determined. A "Taos Richter Fellows" party will follow.

Any student who fails to complete his or her Richter obligations will automatically be suspended from the University Honors Program and will be unable to graduate with "Honors in the Liberal Arts" at SMU until said requirements are satisfactorily completed.
