About the Online Volume

This is an online version of the 1993 republication of Journal of the Texian Expedition Against Mier, Thomas Jefferson Green, first published in 1845 by Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 82 Cliff Street, New York, 487 pp.  The republication is particularly noteworthy because of the index and extensive annotation by Editor Sam W. Haynes. The republication was the second in the series The Library of Texas.

The 1993 book is presented in its entirety, including notation of blank pages. The online book can be accessed sequentially by using "Page-" and "Page+" on the navigation bars at the top and bottom of the pages. "Go to Page" on a navigation bar allows the viewer to jump to any page. The online book can be accessed also from the beginning online page ("Cont." on the navigation bars) where section headings from the 1845 book are listed in their original order on the right. Editorial material from the 1993 book and this online version is listed on the left.

To accommodate a century and a half of citation to the original book, this online volume has the original page numbers added to the text of the 1993 book, within square brackets. The text following an original page number was on that page.

The 1993 book's Index does not include all names so readers should view Appendix No. I for the names of all Texan soldiers in the battle of Mier or who were earlier imprisoned in Mexico. Also, readers can download just the book's text for electronic searching on their PCs, for example by using the Windows FIND or SEARCH programs.

The original table of contents (pp.ix-xiv), a list of chapter names and subheadings, was not reproduced in the 1993 book. The same kind of quick overview can be achieved in this online volume from the first online page ("Cont." on the navigation bars). Click alternately on a chapter name and then the browser's "Back" button, to read through all the chapter subheadings.

Other features of this online volume are chapter headings within the navigation bars and hypertext links to numbered notes. Viewers can click on a numbered note in the text to jump to the note's location. The "Back" button on the internet browser will return viewers to where they were reading.

The images are presented in two sizes, the first presentation fitting current and older monitor screens. A click on "Zoom" will present the larger image, fitting future monitors and providing more detail. Two of the larger images, Plan of Mier and Ground Plan of the Castle of Perote, are from scans of the original 1845 book and are large (285K and 432K) due to the resolution required for the small details. The details are worth the longer download time. All images look better on monitors having greater than 256-color capability.

This online volume was created by H. David Maxey whose web site Index to Military Rolls of the Republic of Texas 1835-1845 is part of The Texian Web Consortium. The Index to Military Rolls includes additional T. J. Green military information. Search The Texian Web sites for more information about the Mier Expedition and biographies of some of its participants.

The Editor

The editor of the 1993 book was Sam W. Haynes, an associate professor at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he has taught since 1993. His publications include two books, Soldiers of Misfortune: The Somervell and Mier Expeditions (1990) and James K. Polk and the Expansionist Impulse (1996). He's currently working on a book on the relations between the United States and Great Britain during the Jacksonian period.

HTML/Browser Level

This section documents some technical details of the design of this online Volume. The objective was to use HTML Level 3.2, but only a subset of the commands and tags as a compromise between features that are incompatible with older browsers and ones that significantly improve the appearance of online material. This volume should be compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 and Netscape Navigator 3.0, and should display acceptably on Netscape Navigator 2.0. By staying within the HTML 3.2 guidelines, these webpages should be compatible with future browsers.

This online volume uses HTML 3.2 Tables to better format text, but not Frames. Some <BR> and <P> tags have been added to the Tables so that the text will be readable, if not as presentable, on older browsers. FONT FACE = "Times New Roman" is being used although some browsers may not have the font installed. Many browsers allow the user to choose what font to use.
