page numbers in that just published work, knowing the ease readers will have in finding those entries.

Mr. Tom Taylor, the originator and typographic designer of this series, has approached the project from the standpoint of producing the highest quality volume we could.  I thank him for identifying the project, asking me to be the editor, encouraging me to locate the original diaries, providing counsel about the contents of the explanatory notes and introduction, and having the commitment to gain permissions to publish the special documents featured in this edition. I am also grateful to DeGolyer Library and the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies for continuing publication of the Library of Texas series.

All of these people made special contributions to the preparation of this book;  however, it is dedicated to my wife Dawn for her devotion to helping me with the art of living.
