centralism; that the person who had furnished Santa Anna with funds had been discovered, and measures were taken to prevent any more from going to him; that Santa Anna had returned to Mexico, etc.  The report is believed here, probably because they wish it true.  Zavala thinks it probable.

This morning Mr. Thomas is found to be opposed to the terms agreed on yesterday about the loan.  And further negotiations have to be entered into.  Potter goes to the coast, to take a view of the ports, and arrange for fortifications, etc.  This is unfortunate, for he is the most liberal and conciliatory member of the Executive and I fear the negotiations will get on badly in his absence.

Had conversation with Scates[15]  about a league of land in Zavala's Colony.  Headright not entered; he gave $250 for the settlement right; on the Opelousas road, called Buxton league.  Dr. Neblett has offered him $250; wants $500; offer him $300 and $100 each for the right of clearing out two leagues for other persons.

Stanley,[16]  McLaughlin and others arrived with five Mexican prisoners from the army, one of them a person well known and believed to have been a spy, named ----- .

Houston's army is on the east side of the Colorado, near Beason's, and the enemy is on the other side, in sight; no fight yet.  Fanning's fate not known.  It is reported he has had a fight.  A person has arrived at headquarters, who stated that he was one of an advanced guard, who, seeing an attack making on Fanning's party, and finding it impossible to join him, they had pushed on.  They heard firing until 10 o'clock at night, and next morning heard two guns, but did not know the result.  The worst is feared.

Negotiations for the loan still continue, but appear to be further from a satisfactory adjustment than before.

Negotiations with Scates off.  He has no title to the land, and can give no security for the making me a title.

Mr. Zavala is sick.  Young Zavala arrived this afternoon on his way to the army.

Weather cloudy and rainy.  Zavala is better today.  Carson sick, health bad generally.  They complain much that Houston does not write to them.
