Beyond Nations:
Evolving Homelands in the North Atlantic World, 1400-2000
John R. Chávez
Professor of History,
Southern Methodist University
John R. Chávez will speak on the writing of his just published Beyond Nations: Evolving Homelands in the North Atlantic World 1400-2000 (Cambridge University Press, 2009) which traces the evolution of “peripheral” ethnic homelands around the North Atlantic, from before transoceanic contact to their current standing in the world political system. Beyond Nations tracks the role of colonialism in the transformation of such lands (including Tejas), but especially the part played by federalism in moving beyond the ethnic and racial conflicts resulting from imperialism.
Chávez is Professor of History at Southern Methodist University and received his Ph.D. in American Culture from the University of Michigan. He is the author of The Lost Land: The Chicano Image of the Southwest (University of New Mexico Press, 1984) which earned him a Pulitzer Prize nomination and Memories and Migrations: Mapping Boricua and Chicana Histories (University of Illinois Press, 2008) which he co-edited with Vicki Ruiz, a volume that had its origins as a Clements Center symposium in 2003-2004. Among his other works are Eastside Landmark: A History of the East Los Angeles Community Union (Stanford University Press, 1998), and Teaching Mexican American History (American Historical Association, 2002) co-authored with Neil Foley.
