MISSION STATEMENT
Through blending tradition and innovation, the Mustang Band will serve the university as a student performance organization for athletic and special events while providing opportunities for musical growth in an ensemble environment that nurtures and develops responsible character, volunteerism, esprit de corps and student leadership.
2009-10 DEPARTMENTAL HIGHLIGHTS
- Performed on Main Quad after Convocation (recessional).
- Performed at Football Kickoff Luncheon.
- Marched at all home football games, away games at TCU, the University of Houston and the Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl.
- A number of current band members attended the band alumni dinner after homecoming. These students met many new (to them) alumni.
- Members of the Mustang Band represented SMU at the C-USA Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournaments in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
- Band members visited Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial in Honolulu. It was a moving and inspirational visit for all.
DEPARTMENTAL CHALLENGES
- To obtain an adequate Mustang Band facility including, but not limited to an acoustically acceptable rehearsal hall, individual sound proofed practice rooms, a sound insulated percussion room and storage space for instruments, uniforms and necessary supplies. We are currently working with Development to obtain the funding required to meet this challenge.
- Provide larger scholarships as an enticement/reward for band participation. With assistance from the Diamond M Club and development we are seeking to increase our scholarship endowment.
- Increase the size of the Mustang Band.
DEPARTMENTAL GOALS
Student Success
Continue to develop and provide leadership opportunities for students. Continue to provide a nurturing/welcoming environment to new students.
Student Learning
Continue to provide performance opportunities at off campus, out of Dallas and out of state venues. Enhance partnerships and collaboration with athletic and music departments.

Modify our use of assessment and evaluation to better measure our effectiveness.
