HNET 3360 Multimedia Applications

HNET 3360 is required of all students who are being considered for admission to the STAR program--i.e., those students whose names are listed on Even if we won't have room in the STAR program for every student or should you decide at the end of class that you don't want to join the program, you still will have satisfied SMU's undergraduate information technology requirement and acquire new or improve existing multimedia skills.

The class meets from 11–12pm on Tuesdays & Thursdays in Fondren Library West.

We will register you for the course. Just be sure to let your advisor know that you are taking it.

IMPORTANT: If you have a class conflict 11–12pm on Tuesdays & Thursdays, you cannot be considered for the STAR program. However, we can keep you in mind for the next time we have openings.

The course is evenly divided between lecture/demo and hands-on.

Design And Operation Of Personal Computers & Networked Systems;
Fundamentals Of Computing (System)

  • What is multimedia and why is it important?; expanding the classical definition of multimedia to include interactivity and networking
  • Multimedia in an information society; the convergence of the computer, communication and content industries; multimedia "appliances" from game machines to set-top boxes
  • Basic system hardware, I/O devices, storage, communications
  • System software; differences between Windows, Macintosh and Unix
  • operating systems; relationship between OS, software, and hardware
  • Selecting and configuring multimedia systems
  • How the Internet works (TCP/IP protocols, etc.)

Developing Proficiency In Core Systems And Applications;
Fundamentals Of Computing (Programming); Emerging Technologies

  • Microsoft Excel; Microsoft Access (note: all students are expected to acquire proficiency in use of MS Word on their own; we will cover how to cleanup the html code that Word creates)
  • Advanced techniques for accessing and evaluating information on the Internet
  • Creating well-designed Web pages characteristics of first, second and third generation Web sites
  • World Wide Web page authoring (with emphasis on using Dreamweaver and advanced skills requiring HTML coding but we'll do one project with FrontPage); Web site structure; maintaining files on Web servers; using WebDAV
  • Extending HTML through CGI, Javascript, Java, and object sharing;
  • Introduction to XML;
  • Image processing with Adobe Photoshop; scanning images; optimizing images for the Web
  • Microsoft Powerpoint
  • Vector-oriented graphics with Adobe Illustrator
  • Digital video with iMovie; optimizing video on the Web; creating DVDs with iDVD
  • Digital audio with Sound Forge or similar software; using sound on the Web
  • 3D software overview (modeling, character animation, rendering)
  • Basic programming concepts (e.g., variables, conditionals; difference between traditional and object programming, etc.)
  • Introduction to authoring, scripting and animation with Macromedia Flash
