Session 1
9:00am - 10:15am


1A: Applying to and Paying for College

 

Receive tips for applying to both public and private universities as well as finding the resources to make it affordable. The SMU Office of Admissions offers advice on ways parents can help their children successfully navigate the college admissions process, and the Office of Financial Aid will outline opportunities for financial aid, scholarships, and tuition benefits. This session is geared toward staff members with children who want to attend SMU or another college/university.

1B: Creating a Culture of Happiness at Work: Yep, it's Worth the Investment

 

According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, employees who are the happiest are also the most productive... up to 36% more productive! Wanting to be happy and wanting your employees to be happier (and yes, more productive) may make good business sense, but creating a positive work environment can feel depressingly difficult. Join this session to learn some simple steps you can follow to begin building a culture of happiness in your department.

1C: Photoshop for Beginners

 

This hands-on workshop is for the ultimate beginner. Attendees will learn how to open Photoshop, familiarize themselves with the most important tools, create a new document, and edit a photo. If you have never used Photoshop before but always wanted to, this workshop is for you. Handouts will be sent prior to session. It is requested that participants print and review the materials prior to the session.

1D: Sustainability at SMU

 

Learn from a panel of members from Facility Services, the Sustainability Committee, and a faculty member about the many sustainability initiatives at SMU. Also learn about the new Sustainability Administrator position and what is coming down the pipeline under his direction.

2A: Understanding Tuition Benefits

 

The Department of Human Resources will offer advice on how to effectively utilize the Tuition Benefits program. Receive tips on what to expect from the program, and how it works. Also, receive information about graduate taxable programs and what it means to your pocketbook. Additionally the Office of Financial Aid will also be on hand to answer questions about tuition benefits and how it works with other financial aid/scholarships. This session is geared toward staff members who are seeking an advance degree for themselves, children, or spouse.

2B: Safe Haven Journaling Session

 

Journaling has been proven to be an effective tool for personal and professional growth. Safe Haven is an interactive, 75-minute presentation that gives participants basic tools to begin the process of journaling and covers the power of language, the cathartic and problem-solving value of the process, vision development and goal-setting. participants will need pen and paper and an open mind. No special skills necessary. Limited to 15 participants.

2C: Stress: Blowing Up or Growing Up

 

The SMU Center for Family Counseling will offer a session to help staff identify and control stress in their lives. Topics include understanding the nature of stress, how life events cause stress, response styles in communication, prevention and intervention, and much more.

2D: Consumer Aware: Positive Buying and Ethical Consumerism

 

Enjoy an overview of several types of ethical consumerism such as positive buying, conscious consumerism, conscientious consumerism, and alternative giving. Examples of products and services that support ethical consumerism will be shared as well as the impact of ethical consumerism on the local and global economy, both financially and culturally.

3D: Bush Presidential Center Overview of Ceremonies and Commemorations

 

President Turner has created an oversight committee related to the opening of the Bush Presidential Center. in this presentation, learn about the various events to occur this April, 2013, in celebration of this historic event at SMU.

4A: Recruiting and Marketing for Graduate Programs

 

Examine the issues related to recruiting, marketing, and branding for graduate degree programs. Specifically, the speakers will discuss their own professional and research experience with graduate admissions along with best practices from the field. Please bring your own department recruiting/marketing materials to share and gain feedback.

4B: Fondren Library Media Collection: What It Has to Offer - Like Free Streaming Media!

 

Find out what resources your Media Library has to offer. Yes we accommodate faculty with media for the classroom but did you know we have feature films, audio books as well as streaming media? We do and we will show you how to locate what you want and how to use it. This session is for all staff that enjoy learning about new things or simply want to build on what they already know.

4C: Outlook Productivity

Are you struggling to gain control over your inbox? This presentation will cover a number of great features and tricks within Microsoft Outlook to help you better manage your mailbox and your time! Learn how to quickly convert emails to tasks or appointments, configure custom rules, simplify email processing and more.

4D: Construction Tour - Residential Commons

SMU is transitioning to a Residential Commons model for student housing. The new Residential Commons consists of five new halls to provide housing for the Freshman/Sophomore class of 2014, a new Dining Facility, and Parking Center to serve the campus. The tour of one of the Residential Commons units, Armstrong Commons, will show the layout of the interior spaces for the student's bedrooms, faculty and director residences, and social gathering spaces within the commons. Session is limited to 20 participates.

6A: Information Session: Be a McFarlin Usher and Earn Extra Cash

 

Looking for a part-time job, close to campus? Come learn about an opportunity to work as a McFarlin usher during evenings and weekends. Earn extra money, serve as a university ambassador, and be part of the McFarlin experience.
