The Margaret L. Hartley Memorial Fund
Throughout the thirty-five years of her association with the Southwest Review
, Margaret Hartley was a vigorous champion of minority rights. Her unwavering dedication to racial justice was to be seen in such writings for the magazine as her article “Black Boundaries in Big Texas,” which explored the multitude of taboos that in 1952 humiliated and hedged in the state’s black citizens; in the inspiration and guidance she afforded as a compassionate editor; and in the warmth and understanding always evident in her personal associations. It is appropriate that a fund has been established in her honor and memory to ensure the continuance and outreach of the magazine.
