The Summer 1949 issue featured an essay by Donald Gallup containing his wartime correspondence with Gertrude Stein. The photograph of Stein was taken by Carl Van Vechten on the terrace of her summer home of Bilignin on June 13, 1934.

2008 Winner

 

 

Kathryn Ma, the daughter of Chinese immigrants, was born and raised in Quaker Pennsylvania. Her stories have been published in Southwest Review, Prairie Schooner, The Threepenny Review, TriQuarterly, The Antioch Review and elsewhere. Her short fiction has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and Best New American Voices, and she was a finalist for the Bakeless Prize and the Peter Taylor Prize for the Novel. Kathryn was a Bread Loaf Scholar and she has taught in the MFA Program in Creative Writing at the University of Oregon. She is the Founding Board Chair for the San Francisco Friends School and a trustee of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. A graduate of Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley, Kathryn and her family live in Northern California. She recently completed a collection of stories entitled All That Work and Still No Boys.
