The Etruscan excavation is part of a long-term project centering on Poggio Colla, a site in Italy's Mugello Valley near the modern town of Vicchio and about twenty miles northeast of Florence. The excavation functions also as the Poggio Colla Field School, allowing students from North American and European universities to participate in the excavation project each summer while studying Etruscan archaeology and archaeological field techniques.
Students and staff are housed in excavation houses near Vicchio in the hamlet of Vespignano, overlooking the Mugello. Despite its proximity to Florence, the Mugello and Val di Sieve countryside has remained relatively unspoiled.
