Internationally renowned Spanish architect, engineer and artist Santiago Calatrava, whose designs range from the 2004 Athens Olympic Sports Complex to Dallas’s Trinity River bridges, will participate in an open public forum held in his honor at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts at 2 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2005, in the Greer Garson Theatre, 6101 Bishop Blvd.
The event is free and open to the public. However, tickets are required and are available from the Meadows Ticket Office at 214-768-2787. Seating is limited.
The forum, “The Architect as Artist: Santiago Calatrava,” will be moderated by James Sullivan, chair of the Division of Art at the Meadows School. The forum will be followed by a reception in the theatre lobby at 3 p.m.
Calatrava is scheduled to give the commencement address at SMU on May 14 and will receive an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from the university. He will also participate in the Meadows School’s graduation ceremonies that evening.
Calatrava has strong ties to SMU and the Meadows School:
- He has a permanent presence at the Meadows Museum through his monumental fountain-sculpture titled “Wave,” displayed in front of the museum, and smaller works that are part of the museum’s collection.
- A retrospective presentation of Calatrava’s work was the inaugural special exhibition of the new Meadows Museum at its grand opening in 200l.
- He also is a recipient of the university’s prestigious Algur H. Meadows Award for Excellence in the Arts.
