Students and Locales

Following is a list of students who have written about their experiences as volunteers, interns and temporary employees in various locations around the world. Click on the student's name to read his or her accounts.

North America

  • Amelia, SMU's New Visions, New Voices. A student director, she journals about her experiences directing fellow students in the The New Visions, New Voices program.
  • Amy, New York City. Attending Parsons School of Design and working with New York designers before launching her fourth collection of clothing under the Revier label
  • Amy D., SMU's New Visions, New Voices. A student playwright, she journals about her experiences creating a production in the The New Visions, New Voices program.
  • Ana, Washington, D.C. A double major in corporate communications and markets and culture from Houston, she participated in "Hilltop on the Hill", an intensive weeklong program that provide opportunities to learn from and network with a variety of communications and political professionals.
  • Angela,New York City. A senior corporate communications and public affairs major from Houston, she spent a week in New York City with other communications students networking and seeing the communications world in action.
  • Astrud,Texas and Connecticut. She will attend Leadershape, a 6-day conference in Bridgeport, Texas, and then go to Yale University (New Haven, CT) for six weeks to attend the Summer Medical Dental Education Program.
  • Brentney, Washington, D.C. A senior English and creative writing major from Telephone, Texas, she spent the spring (2007)semester in Washington, D.C.
  • Chester, Houston. He is participating in the Debakey Summer Surgery Program through the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston this summer (2007).
  • Christina, Christina was part of a group of students, faculty and staff who spent spring break 2007 journeying to the Deep South to learn more about the civil rights movement of the 1960s.
  • Candice, A senior theater major from Plano, Texas, she writes about performing at SMU in Fabulation during fall 2006.
  • Cole, Dallas. A summer intern for the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau
  • Donatas, Dallas. interning at KPGM in Dallas, an international firm providing audit, tax and advisory services
  • Emily, Houston. Emily graduated from SMU in 2003 with a major in Creative Advertising and a minor in Dance Performance, and taught 3rd grade in Houston as part of the Teach for America program.
  • Jade, Dallas and New York City. A dance major from Jacksonville, Florida, she is participating in a project to help the Dance Theater of Harlem
  • John C., Dallas. A senior business major, he started a business in spring 2007 called Follow My Band for fans needing reliable concert information.
  • Laura, Colorado. Press intern for Colorado gubernatorial candidate Marc Holtzman.
  • Laurel, Washington, D.C. A Corporate Communications major from Dallas, she participated in "Hilltop on the Hill", an intensive weeklong program that provide opportunities to learn from and network with a variety of communications and political professionals.
  • Micah, SMU Homecoming. As the 2006 Student Foundation Homecoming Chair, he oversaw all of the Homecoming activities and works with participating student organizations.
  • Michael E., Houston. assisting with medical research at the Stehlin Foundation for Cancer Research in Houston, Texas.
  • Michael W., Memphis. Working for Teach for America in Memphis
  • Quia, Plano. a marketing communications writer for a software company based in Plano
  • Robert, Alaska. Robert, a double major in dance and geological sciences, attended Geology Field Camp at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. (Summer 2005)
  • Sara, Texas Rio Grande Valley. Working for Teach for America in Rio Grande Valley
  • SMU-in-Taos, New Mexico. Students taking classes through the SMU-in-Taos program
  • Susan, Phoenix, AZ. She has committed the next two years to Teach for America, a program that places recent college graduates in some of the nation's most low-income communities.
  • Tommy, Dallas, TX. Working with junior high and high school athletes as an assistant strength instructor for the Performance Course

Europe

  • Alan, London. Majoring in economics and foreign language, Alan is spending the 2006-07 school year studying at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
  • Dane, Medieval Pilgrimage. Was among a group of students who traveled through France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain to experience the actual Pilgrimage of the Middle Ages.
  • Daniel, Medieval Pilgrimage. Was among a group of students who traveled through France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain to experience the actual Pilgrimage of the Middle Ages.
  • Derrick, Before joining the work force, he conducted independent study in Europe as a Richter Scholar in summer 2006.
  • Jessica, Vienna. immersed in music at the Bosendorfer International Piano Academy in Vienna
  • Karen, Spain. A math and geology major from Albequerque, New Mexico, she is spending spring 2007 in Madrid at the SMU-in-Spain program.
  • Katherine and Megan, Turkey. They will be sharing a blog from their Geology Field Camp in Turkey.
  • Kristin, Germany. She spent Spring Break 2007 in Germany studying human rights with fellow students and Dr. Rick Halperin, director of SMU's new Human Rights Program.
  • Liz, Medieval Pilgrimage. Was among a group of students who traveled through France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain to experience the actual Pilgrimage of the Middle Ages.
  • Sheila, SMU-in-Oxford. A junior, she is headed to SMU-in-Oxford for summer 2007.
  • Taylor, Italy. Majoring in biochemistry, he was one of the youngest players on the USA Paralympic Sled Hockey team.
  • Vedrana, Croatia. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study emerging democracy in Croatia, the country she fled as a 10-year-old

Asia

  • Annie, India. An art history major from Houston, she spent fall 2006 with the University of Iowa’s Semester in South India program.
  • Esteban, Ukraine. Leading students on a mission trip to Ukraine to help build an orphanage
  • Jimmy, Kuala Lumpur. A 2003 graduated, he is a Senior Associate Consultant with Bain & Company, a strategy consulting firm with 31 offices in 19 countries.
  • Lydia, India. She spent summer 2005 helping the non-profit organization STOP to re-educate young girls forced into prostitution.
  • Mimi, India. She will travel throughout India this summer (2007) and volunteer for Unite for Sight in the region.
  • Omair, Taiwan. Conducting medical research
  • Pragya, Nepal. She is returning to Nepal this summer (2007) to work with "Peace Ambassadors," a peace project funded by the Kathryn Wasserman Davis Fund
  • Sommer, Romania. An intern with Humanity United in Giving Internationally, a nonprofit organization that has established orphanages in Romania and India
  • Steven, Russia. Spending five weeks at Moscow State University studying the Russian language

Central America

  • Ben, Costa Rica. A senior majoring in mechanical engineering, he served as trip supervisor on Outdoor Adventures' Winter Break 2006 trip to Costa Rica.
  • Harvey, Belize. Part of a research project looking into the impact of traditional Mayan healing.
  • John, Costa Rica. A Hunt Scholar and past photo editor of SMU's student newspaper, he photographed utdoor Adventures' Winter Break 2006 trip to Costa Rica..

South America

  • Kelly, Chile. Teaching English to Chilean businesspeople.

Africa

  • Taplin, South Africa. Researching environmental issues.

Australia

  • John S., Australia. He's studying in Perth, Australia, as part of the SMU-in-Australia program, which includes a three-week tour of Asia followed by a semester of study at Curtin University in Perth.

World Travelers

  • Blake. Traveling the world during summer 2006 from the Great Barrier Reef of Australia to bobsledding in the Baltics.
  • Jonathan. Jonathan, a junior majoring in psychology, will branch out from his hometown of San Antonio this summer (2007) to visit New Mexico and England.
  • Maria, Southeast Asia, New Zealand, Argentina. Traveling the world.
  • Tiana, Tiana has written about her studies and travels in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Nazi death camps, The Czech Republic, and Arizona.
