Current Adventures

  • Alexandria, Italy. (Summer 2010) Alexandria is a senior Hunt Scholar majoring in art history in Meadows School of the Arts, with a minor in English in Dedman College. In summer 2010, she is participating in SMU-in-Italy in Orvieto, a medieval hill town in Umbria.
  • Andres, Peru. (Spring 2010) Andres, a graduate student in geophysics in Dedman College's Huffington Department of Earth Sciences, is working on a heat flow map of Peru for his doctoral dissertation.
  • Brian, South Africa. (Summer 2010) Brian Fennig, a wellness lecturer in the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development, is traveling to South Africa in summer 2010.
  • Catherine, Spain. (Summer 2010) Catherine received a Richter fellowship for summer 2010 to travel to Madrid and research the integration of people with disabilities into Spanish society.
  • CCPA, Taos. (Summer 2010) Six students from Corporate Communications and Public Affairs in Meadows School of the Arts will serve as communications interns at nonprofit organizations in Taos, N.M., this summer.
  • Colton, Dallas. (Summer 2010) For summer 2010, Colton has been selected to participate as a Collegiate Fellow in the summer internship program at Dallas' Parkland Hospital.
  • Eric, Japan. (Fall 2010) Eric is participating in SMU's Embrey Human Rights Program trip to Japan, where students and faculty will visit sites including the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Hall and Nagasaki Peace Museum.
  • Erica, Cairo. (Fall 2010) Erica will be taking classes in Egyptology and Middle Eastern studies at the American University in Cairo with SMU-in-Cairo. She hopes to learn as much Arabic as possible while traveling throughout the region.
  • Jessica, Dallas and Jordan. (Summer 2010) Jessica is working for the National Center for Policy Analysis' debate institute, "Debate Central." The NCPA will be holding a debate camp in Amman, Jordan, along with General Tommy Franks, The King's Academy and Oklahoma Christian University's Institute for Leadership and Liberty. Jessica travels to Jordan in July to instruct debate and public speaking with the camp, as well as educate the students there on the debate topic, which addresses the Middle East peace process. Jessica also is serving as managing editor of the White Rock Lake Weekly, a Dallas-area newspaper whose editor-in-chief is an SMU graduate
  • Jessica, Spain. (Summer 2010) Jessica is studying in Valladolid, Spain, in a language-intensive program and then will spend the fall in Madrid with SMU-in-Spain.
  • Jessica, Taos. (Summer 2010) Jessica received a Richter Research Fellowship to investigate the Taos Pueblo and Tanoan language groups in Native American folklore tradition at SMU-in-Taos.
  • Jina, China. (Summer 2010) Jina, a senior management major in Cox School of Business, is spending summer 2010 in Hong Kong with the SMU-in-China program.
  • JJ, Dominican Republic. (Summer 2010) JJ, a senior majoring in biology, with minors in chemistry and math in Dedman College, is traveling to the Dominican Republic in summer 2010. There, he will be living with a host family, volunteering in a health clinic and doing other mission work in San Pedro with an organization called Esperanza International.
  • Kat, India. (Summer 2010) A graduate student at SMU's Temerlin Advertising Institute, Kat is participating in SMU-in-India during summer 2010, doing in-class coursework in Ahmedabad, as well as two weeks taking field trips.
  • Lydia, Xalapa. (Summer 2010) Lydia is spending summer 2010 studying in Mexico with SMU-in-Xalapa. She is excited to put her nine years of Spanish classes to good use while immersing herself in Xalapan culture.
  • Megan, Houston . (Summer 2010) Megan, a senior biology major in Dedman College, is participating in the eight-week Michael E. Debakey Summer Surgery Program in Houston, where she will work closely with a faculty mentor to learn more about careers in surgery.
  • Nabi, Moscow. (Summer 2010) Nabi is participating in SMU-in-Moscow during summer 2010.
  • Pia, France. (Summer 2010) Pia spending a month this summer in Cannes, France, on a Richter Research Fellowship to investigate the relationship between the popular, wealthy city and its local, national and international charities.
  • Rachel, Italy. (Summer 2010) Rachel is participating in SMU-in-Italy and helping archaeologists excavate an Etruscan hilltop settlement.
  • Ricardo, Africa. (Summer 2010) Ricardo is a graduate student in geology in the Huffington Department of Earth Sciences in Dedman College. A recipient of the prestigious Fulbright fellowship, Ricardo is spending summer 2010 in Angola and Mozambique.
  • SMU Engineering, Annapolis. (Summer 2010) Students in SMU's Lyle School of Engineering traveled to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, during summer 2010 to meet fellow researchers working on iris recognition.
  • SMU Habitat for Humanity, El Salvador. (Summer 2010) Members of SMU Habitat for Humanity traveled to El Salvador in May 2010 to build two houses in a rural community of about 90 families.
  • SMU Outdoor Adventures SMU Outdoor Adventures offers recreational trips and outdoor skills workshops from its “base camp” at the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports.
  • Zainab, Gaza (Summer 2010) In summer 2010, Zainab, a sophomore majoring in biochemistry in Dedman College, is traveling to Gaza in the Palestinian Territories to volunteer at medical facilities.
