Europe

  • Alan, London. Majoring in economics and foreign language, Alan is spending the 2006-07 school year studying at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
  • Alessandra, Denmark. (Spring 2009) Alessandra is a junior finance major with an economics and French minor. She will be spending Spring 2009 in Denmark with SMU-in-Copenhagen.
  • Archaeology in Italy. (Summer 2009) More than 50 students, scholars and archaeological professionals from more than 20 universities, including SMU, will assemble in Tuscany in Summer 2009 to excavate the Etruscan sanctuary and settlement of Poggio Colla.
  • Ashley, Paris (Summer 2008) Ashley, a senior, was awarded a Richter International Fellowship to conduct independent, graduate-level research this summer in Paris, where she plans to examine primary documents and pieces of chinoiserie at the major libraries and museums.
  • Astrud, Copenhagen (Fall 2008) Astrud, a junior majoring in biology and minoring international studies, is participating in SMU-in-Copenhagen during Fall 2008.
  • Bianca, Greece (Summer 2007). An acting major/English minor, Bianca is headed to Greece for a classical acting program.
  • Brenda, with SMU-in-Paris (Fall 2007), is a junior majoring in journalism and French who is studying with SMU-in-Paris this fall.
  • Charanya, Paris (Fall 2008) Charanya is a junior President's Scholar with a triple major in political science, French and finance. This fall, she's participating in SMU-in-Paris.
  • Cheyenne with SMU-in-Spain (Fall 2007). Cheyenne is majoring in political science and English with a minor in Spanish. She is spending the fall semester in Madrid.
  • Claire, SMU-in-Paris (Fall 2007). Claire, a junior CCPA major and Studio Art minor from Fredericksburg, is studying fall 2007 with SMU-in-Paris. She spent the summer with SMU-in-London, where she interned with Greenbelt Movement International.
  • Dale, World Traveler (Summer 2007). After graduating in 2007 with a CCPA major and French minor, Dale moved to London to intern in Parliament and experience more international perspective. Each year he strives to visit two international festivals and tackle at least one major adventure.
  • Dana, SMU-in-Britain. (Fall 2008) Dana is a senior Honors student majoring in art history in Meadows School of the Arts with a double minor in political science and Italian area studies. She will be studying at University College in London from September to June as part of the SMU-in-Britain program.
  • Dane, Europe. (Summer 2008) Dane is a junior history major who was awarded a Richter International Fellowship to conduct independent, graduate-level research this summer in Europe. He is exploring the phenomenon of racism in European soccer and plans to attend the Euro 2008 tournament.
  • Dane, Medieval Pilgrimage. Was among a group of students who traveled through France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain to experience the actual Pilgrimage of the Middle Ages.

  • Derrick, Before joining the work force, he conducted independent study in Europe as a Richter Scholar in summer 2006.
  • Elisabeth, SMU-in-Paris. (Summer 2008) Elisabeth is a sophomore majoring in journalism from Denver who is participating in SMU-in-Paris this summer. She's looking forward to learning art history inside The Louvre and traveling to the Loire Valley.
  • Eric, Madrid. (Fall 2009) Eric, a junior majoring in accounting in the Cox School of Business and Spanish in Dedman College, is a Hunt Leadership Scholar and Cox BBA Scholar. In Fall 2009, he is living and studying in Spain's capital through the SMU-in-Spain program
  • Federico, SMU-in-Spain. (Fall 2009) The recipient of a Marion Tower Study Abroad Scholarship for Fall 2009, Federico is studying at the Fundacion Jose Ortega y Gasset in Madrid through SMU-in-Spain.
  • Freddie, SMU-in-the-South-of-France. (Summer 2008) Freddie, a sophomore Hunt Scholar majoring in international studies and foreign languages, is participating in the SMU-in-the-South-of-France program based in Cannes. He'll be taking intensive language classes and traveling with the group and friends.
  • George, SMU-in-Oxford. (Summer 2008) George is a junior majoring in accounting, economics and Spanish. A recipient of the Mustang Leaders Scholarship and Dorothy Murphy Scholarship, he is participating this summer in SMU-in-Oxford. He hopes to learn as much from his experience outside the classroom as he will from his education inside the classroom.
  • James, SMU-in-Paris. (Spring 2009) James, a French and history double major, is returning to France in Spring 2009 for his second semester abroad. He is hoping to reconnect with old friends and his French family while working on his language and culture skills in preparation for graduation and a master's degree program.
  • Jason, Paris. (Fall 2009) Jason is a junior majoring in music composition in Meadows School of the Arts and the recipient of a Meadows Artistic Scholarship. In Fall 2009 he is participating in SMU-in-Paris, where he intends to study the past and present culture.
  • Jessica, Vienna. immersed in music at the Bosendorfer International Piano Academy in Vienna.
  • Jessica, Archaeology in Italy. (Summer 2008) Jessica is a senior marketing major, with a minor in art history, who leaves in June for an archaeological dig outside of Vicchio, in the Mugello Valley, as part of SMU-in-Italy: Archaeology. The site is an Etruscan settlement that has been being excavated for about 12 years.
  • Jon, Poland. (Summer 2008) Jon is a sophomore majoring in economics and engineering management, information and systems from Springfield, Mo. This summer he has an internship in Krakow, Poland, as a business analyst for Sabre.
  • Jonathan, Poland. (December 2008) Jonathan, a junior in the Creative Writing program in Dedman College's English Department, is participating in the SMU Human Rights Education Program's December trip to Poland. There, program director Rick Halperin will lead visits to World War II Nazi death camps.
  • Jordan, Germany. (Summer 2009) Jordan is a junior President's Scholar and a triple major in music in SMU's Meadows School of the Arts and anthropology and history in Dedman College, with minors in human rights and European studies. In Summer 2009, she is participating in SMU-in-Germany and the Global Leadership Program in Prague and Berlin, which trains students to become community, business and political leaders through university courses, cultural activities and community service.
  • Julia, SMU-in-Paris (Fall 2007). Julia is a junior from Plano majoring in history, with a French minor, and is a member of the University Honors Program. She is studying abroad with SMU-in-Paris in fall 2007.
  • Juliana, SMU-in-Oxford. (Summer 2008) Juliana is a Hunt Scholar from Denver and a junior majoring in accounting and CCPA (Corporate Communications and Public Affairs). She is spending the summer in SMU-in-Oxford and hopes to experience different parts of Europe through travel. She is excited to be taking a class on C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, since many of their great works were written in Oxford – and it also will be a nice change of pace from accounting and CCPA classes!
  • Karen, Spain. A math and geology major from Albequerque, New Mexico, she is spending spring 2007 in Madrid at the SMU-in-Spain program.
  • Katherine and Megan, Turkey. They will be sharing a blog from their Geology Field Camp in Turkey.
  • Katie in Scotland. (Fall 2008/Spring 2009) Katie is a member of the University Honors Program and a junior majoring in political science with a religious studies minor. As part of SMU-in-Britain, she will be studying in the International Relations department at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where her courses will include "Human Rights in Theory and Practice" and "Politics of China."
  • Kristin, Germany. She spent Spring Break 2007 in Germany studying human rights with fellow students and Dr. Rick Halperin, director of SMU's new Human Rights Program.
  • Laura, Human Rights Pilgrimage (Spring 2008) Laura is a sophomore journalism major with minors in art history, photography and human rights. She is participating in the Spring Break Human Rights Pilgrimage to the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany.
  • Laura, SMU-in-Spain. (Spring 2009) Laura is a sophomore majoring in political science and Spanish in Dedman College. In Spring 2009, she will be taking courses toward her Spanish major in Spain at the Fundacion Jose Ortega y Gasset, while being immersed in Spanish culture.
  • Leela, SMU-in-Spain. (Fall 2009) Leela is a junior Hunt Scholar majoring in corporate communications and public affairs in Meadows School of the Arts and in Spanish, with an Italian minor, in Dedman College. She is spending Fall 2009 in Madrid, where she'll be taking courses, learning about Spanish culture, living with a Spanish family and exploring the country.
  • Liz, Medieval Pilgrimage. Was among a group of students who traveled through France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain to experience the actual Pilgrimage of the Middle Ages.
  • Marissa, SMU-in-Britain. (Fall 2008/Spring 2009) Marissa is a junior University and Mustang Scholar from Dallas majoring in international studies and anthropology in Dedman College. Through the SMU-in-Britain program, she is spending the academic year at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, studying international relations and modern history.
  • Meleah, SMU-in-Paris (Summer 2009) Meleah, a senior markets and culture major, with a psychology minor in Dedman College, is spending Summer 2009 in France with SMU-in-Paris. She will be taking history courses and is looking forward to exploring Europe on the weekends, before graduating from SMU in August.
  • Melissa, SMU-in-Germany, (Summer 2008) Melissa, a junior majoring in oboe performance and a President’s Scholar, is participating in SMU-in-Germany. As part of the summer program, students visit Bach’s home, hear the Berlin Philharmonic and experience university life in the former East German town of Weimar.
  • Nichole, Oxford. (Fall 2009) Nichole, a second-year evening law student at Dedman School of Law, participated in Summer 2009 in the School’s Oxford Summer Program, in association with University College.
  • Ola, Italy (Summer 2008). Ola is a student at SMU’s Master of Science in Counseling program. She also works for SMU’s Institute for Reading Research at the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development. This summer she spent a week in beautiful Florence taking a class titled Religion and Dispute Resolution.
  • Patrick, United Kingdom. (Summer 2009) Patrick is a senior religious studies and psychology major in Dedman College who has been awarded a Richter Research Fellowship for Summer 2009. He is in the United Kingdom studying how globalization has shaped and is continuing to shape newly “emerging” churches.
  • Rachel, SMU-in-Copenhagen (Fall 2007). Rachel is junior majoring in biology and chemistry and minoring in mathematics and religious studies. She’s also a President’s Scholar, and she’s spending the Fall 2007 semester with SMU-in-Copenhagen.
  • Rachel, SMU-in-Spain Rachel is a President's Scholar and senior majoring in political science and foreign languages in Dedman College. This fall, she will be living with a Spanish family in Madrid and taking classes at the Fundacion Jose Ortega y Gasset.
  • Rebecca, France and Spain. (Summer 2009) Rebecca is a President’s Scholar and a triple major in art history in Meadows School of the Arts and Spanish and French in Dedman College. In Summer 2009, she will begin her travels in the sunny South of France on the Cote d’Azur before continuing to Barcelona. There, she will pursue a Richter research project, studying the relationship between nationalized Catholicism, the Franco regime and parish church architecture in the Catalunya region of northeastern Spain. After Barcelona, Rebecca will continue to the Burgundy region of France, where she will volunteer as a guest worker on an organic vegetable farm before settling down for Fall 2009 in Madrid.
  • Rebecca, SMU-in-Oxford (Summer 2008). Rebecca, a Hunt Scholar and junior at SMU, is a double major in political science and English. She is participating in SMU-in-Oxford, where she will be taking one English and one honors history course. She also will be exploring a new culture by visiting Paris (on Bastille weekend) and Belgium.
  • Sarah, Paris (Fall 2009) Sarah is a junior President's Scholar majoring in art history in Meadows School of the Arts and Spanish in Dedman College. In Fall 2009, she will be taking art history and French classes through SMU-in-Paris.
  • SMU-in-London 2007, 48 communication students from SMU's Meadows School of the Arts are studying international media, advertising, British cinema and nonprofit communications.
  • Shelby, SMU-in-Copenhagen (Spring 2009) Shelby is a junior President’s Scholar majoring in dance and psychology. In Spring 2009, she is taking classes at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad in affiliation with the University of Copenhagen and also will be taking dance classes at Dansens Hus professional training school.
  • SMU-in-London 2008 (Summer 2008) This summer 48 SMU students are traveling to London to study communication courses, including international media, free speech, creative advertising, British cinema and the global civil society. Some students also are interning with international human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, Pants to Poverty, and Save the Children, to name a few.
  • Snigdha, SMU-in-Copenhagen (Fall 2009) Snigdha is a junior biology major, minoring in chemistry and math, in Dedman College. In Fall 2009, she is participating in the Medical Practice and Policy Program at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad through SMU-in-Copenhagen.
  • Sommer and Lindsey, Romania (Summer 2009) Sommer and Lindsey are traveling to Romania for two weeks in summer 2009 to report on the status of orphanages, 20 years after the fall of communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Their project is partially funded by a Meadows Exploration Award. Sommer ’08 graduated in December with degrees in journalism from Meadows School of the Arts and history from Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences. Lindsey is a senior marketing major in Cox School of Business and a photojournalist.

  • Tara, Poland (Summer 2008) Tara is an SMU Distinguished Scholar and a junior majoring in computer science and math. This summer, she is one of five SMU students interning with Sabre Polska (the Poland office of Sabre-Holdings). She is working in Airline Solutions on the Crew Recovery Project.
  • Taylor, Italy. Majoring in biochemistry, he was one of the youngest players on the USA Paralympic Sled Hockey team.
  • Tiana, Tiana has written about her studies and travels in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Nazi death camps, The Czech Republic, Arizona, and Australia.
  • Vedrana, Croatia. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study emerging democracy in Croatia, the country she fled as a 10-year-old
  • Whitney, Denmark (Fall 2008) Whitney is a junior from Albuquerque, New Mexico, who is an international studies and premed major. At SMU, she serves as a resident assistant and is involved with Campus Ministries. She is studying abroad this fall with SMU-in-Copenhagen.
  • Will, SMU-in-Paris (Spring 2009) Will, a double major in cinema-television and economics, is spending Spring 2009 in Paris. He hopes to study different art forms with a focus on French cinema history.
