
The purpose of the Minority Student Orientation is to give first year/transfer minority students and their families the opportunity to make key connections with SMU before classes begin and on a personal level. The Council of Presidents for the Cultural Umbrella Organizations: Association of Black Students, Asian Council and College Hispanic American Students, invites everyone who wants to be part of the multicultural community and develop new friendships and lasting bonds as a part of the SMU Family, to our annual Multicultural Overnight Extravaganza. “MOE” takes place from September 11th at 5pm to September 12th at Noon. MOE is an overnight event held at Dedman Rec Center. Attendance is FREE if you complete and return a registration form no later than 5 PM on Friday, September 4. During the spring semester, SAMSA recognizes the academic achievement of all minority students. Students who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above are recognized. At the ceremony, students are recognized for their hard work and dedication in the presence of their parents, family, SMU administrators, and their peers. This annual celebration held in the spring semester allows all of the multicultural organizations advised through SAMSA to recognize their members. Students and organizations receive the following awards: First Year Member of the Year, Upper-class Member of the Year, Executive Board Member of the Year, Program of the Year, and Organization of the Year. The mission of the Diversity Education Program is to train students to serve as peer educators on diversity issues. Students are selected each year to participate in diversity training. Training includes small-group discussion, games, simulations, case studies, and role-plays.
