DEP provides workshops that deal with issues of diversity, including, but not limited to Racism, Classism, Sexism, Heterosexism, and Ableism. We also have more general workshops that can introduce issues of stereotypes, assumptions, and inclusively.
This workshop allows participants to reach a better understanding of how our experiences shape our lives. Participants will have the opportunity to share the history of their lives and see how each of us shape the fabric of diversity.
Participants will enter a visual display focusing on current issues from the media. They will have the opportunity to express their opinions and see the opinions of others. This workshop discusses issues of Racism, Classism, Sexism, Heterosexism and Ableism.
Presenters will introduce the concepts of stereotypes, the process of socialization, discrimination, oppression, and internalized oppression. A 16 minute video, featuring Jane Elliot’s “Brown Eyes, Blues Eyes” experiment will be shown the video will help the participant understand how the concepts apply to everyday life. This presentation is most suited for groups that would like a foundation in understanding and eliminating stereotypes.
This workshop will give participants an overview of the principle of inclusive Leadership, as well as strategies for developing the skills necessary to becoming an inclusive leader. This is a good introductory workshop to help people see the value of cultural awareness.
This workshop leads the participants through an open and honest discussion of the effects of stereotypes. The workshop format allows participants to share their own experiences so that everyone may learn from each other. This activity is especially well suited for a large group.
This workshop is designed to illustrate societal concepts of power and class. This activity allows participants to understand the origins of such concepts as well as discuss their personal reactions and experiences. This activity is especially well suited for a large group.
This workshop will lead participants on decision-making process allowing them to confront stereotypes and assumptions. The group must also utilize valuable team building skills in order to defend decisions and confront solutions.
This workshop can be used to introduce the concept of privilege as a way of understanding how subtle forms of oppression are present in our everyday lives. Participants will work together to examine our society and discuss group privileges and exclusivity as it manifest today. Workshop areas should be large enough for all participants to be able to walk forward at least 20-30 feet.
This workshop is an exploration of the cycle of ones perception influenced by social pressures. This workshop will look at the “lens of identity” of how each person sees the world.
