Independent Research Abroad for University Honors Program Students

Richter Application Checklist

Careful planning is essential.  You should know exactly what you want to do, where you will do it, when it will be done, how long it will take, and how you will accomplish your task.  Your goals and your methodology should be clear both to you and to the review committee reading your application.

All forms are included in the Richter Fellowship Application Packet

A completed application will include:

1. Application Form
    
2. Budget (see related link on Budget Guidelines)
    
3. Faculty Evaluation
   
   The Faculty Evaluation should be completed by someone with whom you have discussed your proposal, knows you and can comment on your ability to carry out this project.
    
4. Language Evaluation
   
   If you are traveling to a country where the primary language is not English, or if your research depends on interviewing non-English speakers, you will need a language evaluation.  The language evaluation should be completed by an SMU faculty member who will evaluate your skills in the language of the proposed project site. 
    
5. Proposal (see related link on Writing a Good Proposal)
    
6. Timeline
    
   Your timeline should be a detailed chronological plan of your project. It is important to have a schedule you can follow during your time abroad. Be realistic in your planning, and be sure to note holidays when cultural and governmental centers might be closed. Pay close attention to your dates of travel to and from sites.
    
7. Release of Liability Form (pick up in 222A Dallas Hall)
