GEORGE W. REDDIEN
George W. Reddien, Professor of Mathematics in
Dedman College, earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in applied mathematics
from Georgia Institute of Technology. After teaching at Vanderbilt University
for eight years, he joined the SMU faculty in 1979. His research interests are
in the numerical solution of boundary value problems, including numerical
techniques for bifurcation analysis. In addition to his teaching, he has served
in several major administrative positions, including chair of the Department of
Mathematics from 1980-1986 and 1994-1997, associate provost from 1986-1989 and
dean of Research and Graduate Studies from 1989-1992. Professor Reddien's
dedication to teaching has been recognized with the Provost's Office Award for
Outstanding Faculty, the Betty McKnight Speairs Endowed Teaching Excellence
Award in Mathematics and selection as a HOPE (Honoring Our Professors'
Excellence) Professor by Residence Life and Student Housing. He has served on
several M.S. and Ph.D. committees and directed Ph.D. theses. The author of
numerous professional publications, he has served as editor and managing editor
for the SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) Journal on
Numerical Analysis, a premier journal in the field. He retires as Professor
Emeritus of Mathematics.
