COMMENCEMENT WEEKEND

Baccalaureate Service

The Baccalaureate Service will take place on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. in McFarlin Auditorium. Guest tickets are required for admittance to the main  Baccalaureate Service ceremony for undergraduate degree candidates held in McFarlin Auditorium.  All undergraduate candidates are entitled to two tickets for their guests. Tickets are not required for the simulcast of the Baccalaureate Service in the Theater of Hughes-Trigg Student Center.  

Additional tickets for the Baccalaureate Service in McFarlin Auditorium are not available. We ticket the Baccalaureate Service to assure that each undergraduate candidate can have at least two guests in attendance to this religious service which is intended to be a small and intimate ceremony for candidates and their guests.

Guests With Tickets

Doors to McFarlin Auditorium open at 6:45 p.m. Early arrival is advised. All ticketed seats are released at 7:30 p.m. At approximately 7:35 p.m. non-ticketed guests in the queue waiting for available seats will be permitted to choose a seat among those that are vacant.

Guests without Tickets

Guests without tickets may wait in a queue for any seats in McFarlin that may become available. The queue line will be formed beginning at 6:45 p.m. on the sidewalk at the southeast corner of the front steps to McFarlin. In the event of rain, the queue will be formed in the lower lobby of McFarlin. At approximately 7:35 p.m. non-ticked guest in the queue waiting for available seats will be permitted to choose a seat among those that are vacant. The seats will be issued based upon those who arrived fist in line.

Additionally, a live simulcast of the Baccalaureate Service will be offered in the Theatre of the Hughes-Trigg Student Center. Guests without a ticket may attend the simulcast; a shuttle cart will be running a route between the McFarlin Auditorium and Hughes-Trigg. Elderly guests or guests with children often choose to attend the simulcast due to the ease of entering and exiting the building for the Rotunda Recessional.

Guests with Disabilities

Guests with disabilities can park in the lot located on the northwest side of McFarlin Auditorium facing Hillcrest Avenue. Entrance to this lot is from McFarlin Boulevard. You may enter McFarlin Auditorium using the ramp on the southeast side of the building, off of McFarlin Boulevard. Ushers will be available for assistance. Guests' current state-issued disabled parking placard and license plates are needed to park in this area. Additional parking passes are not needed.

Commencement Convocation

Guests do not need tickets to attend the all-University Commencement Convocation ceremony that will be held on May 12, 2012 in Moody Coliseum at 9:30 a.m.  Doors to Moody Coliseum open at 8:00 a.m. and guests are encouraged to be seated by 9:15 a.m.

Guests with Disabilities

Baccalaureate Service

Guests with disabilities can park in the lot located on the northwest side of McFarlin Auditorium facing Hillcrest Avenue. Entrance to this lot is from McFarlin Boulevard. You may enter McFarlin Auditorium using the ramp on the southeast side of the building, off of McFarlin Boulevard. Ushers will be available for assistance. Guests' current state-issued disabled parking placard and license plates are needed to park in this area. Additional parking passes are not needed.

Commencement Convocation

Doors to Moody Coliseum open at 8:00 a.m. Disabled guests are encouraged to be seated soon after the doors open. Disabled guests who are driving themselves may park on Binkley Avenue, the road adjacent to Moody Coliseum. Guests' current state-issued disabled parking placard and license plates are needed to park in this area. Additional parking passes are not needed.

Guests with mobility issues riding with family may be dropped off at the Mustang Statue at the corner of Airline Road and Binkley Avenue. No pass needed.

Disabled guests should use the northeast entrance to Moody Coliseum at the bottom of the large downward ramp, each guest will be permitted to have one attendant join them. A total of 5 seats for guests and 5 seats for attendants are available on the Coliseum level and a limited number of guest and attendant seats are available on the Moody floor. Seats are first-come first-served and ushers will be available to escort guests to the proper area.

Persons with difficulties climbing stairs may be seated with one attendant in the first three rows of Sections A, B, C, D, O, P & Q. These seats are accessible via the front doors of Moody Coliseum and a total of 142 seats for guests and 142 seats for attendants are available. Ushers will be available to escort guests to the proper area.

Diploma Presentation Ceremony Tickets

Tickets are not required to attend Commencement Convocation; however, Diploma Presentation Ceremonies at the candidate's school of record may require tickets. Please contact the ceremony coordinator for your student's department for further information.

Maps & Parking

Those attending Commencement activities at Southern Methodist University on Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12, may park in any of the University’s parking facilities:

  • Airline Garage
    Located at Airline Road and Daniel Avenue

  • Moody Garage
    Located at Airline Road and SMU Boulevard

  • Binkley Garage
    Located at the corner of Binkley Avenue and Ownby Drive

Access to some street-level lots may not be available until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Maps showing the location of parking lots and campus buildings, and directions to campus are available at http://www.smu.edu/maps.

No parking will be permitted on Bishop Boulevard.

Laws and regulations that prohibit parking in fire lanes and limit who may use areas reserved for the disabled are strictly enforced.

Please allow extra time to find parking and reach Moody Coliseum as construction activities may affect routes from parking areas to various locations on campus. The University has begun several construction projects to improve service to current students by providing first-rate facilities to remain competitive for the students, faculty, and staff in the coming years. Many facilities also will make SMU’s educational, cultural, and recreational activities more accessible to the community.

Photographs

Personal photographs may be taken only before and after the Baccalaureate Service and Commencement Convocation ceremony. No one is permitted in the aisles during the ceremonies.

Arrangements have been made with a professional photographer to take Doctoral candidates' photographs as they are hooded at Commencement Convocation. Each Doctoral graduate will receive a proof after the ceremony. If you have questions concerning photographs, please contact Flash Photography at 214-443-9393, Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
