PomThe 3-time NDA National Collegiate Champion (2006, 2008, 2009) SMU Pom Squad is a group of 12 to 16 young ladies of all different ages and degress but all share the same love of dancing and SMU!

The Pom Squad is well known for their energetic performances and their ability to entertain a crowd. The dancing style of the team includes jazz, pom and hip hop.

The Pom Squad performs on the sidelines and at halftime of all home football games and travels to some away games. They also perform at all men's and women's basketball games.

The SMU Pom Squad attends NDA's College Nationals in Daytona, Florida each year where they won a national title in the Division IA Open Dance category in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

The SMU Pom Squad is committed to bringing spirit and excitement to the campus of SMU and we look forward to seeing you at a football and basketball game soon! PONY UP!!

SMU POM SQUAD TRYOUTS 2013-2014

Tryouts for the 2013 - 2014 SMU Pom Squad will be held the weekend of May 4th and 5th.

Tryout Choreography Clinic:
Date: Saturday, May 4
Time: 9 a.m. - registration
         9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. - choreography clinic
Location: Crum Basketball Center - first level

*All tryout choreography will be taught during the clinic

Tryouts:

Date: Sunday, May 5th
Time: 9 am - 4 pm*
Location: Crum Basketball Center -first level

*This is a rough estimate on when tryouts will finish. Tryouts should not last longer than 4p.m. The new team will have their first meeting one hour after tryouts end. The 2013-2014 SMU Pom Squad will be announced at the conclusion of the tryout process on Sunday, May 5th at approximately 4 p.m.

Tryout Dance Requirements:

Basic Skills (each Pom squad hopeful will be required to perform these skills)

  • Double pirouette turns (right and left)

  • Grand jetes (right and left)

  • Russian side leaps (right and left)

  • High kicks (right and left)

  • Pique, coupe, chainne turns (right and left)

  • Calypso

Advanced Skills (Pom squad hopefuls who would like to also be considered for our competition squad will also be required to perform these skills):

  • Triple pirouette turns (right and left)

  • Switch leaps (right and left)

  • Fouette turns in second

  • Attitude turns

  • Leg turns

  • Spinning discs

  • Toe Touch

All pom squad hopefuls will learn a portion of the fight song, a jazz combination, a pom combination and a hip hop combination.

Appearance/ What to Wear:

Clinic: Please come dressed in a colorful sports bra/half top, bootie shorts, tights/hose, jazz shoes. We are looking for a collegiate image. Wear make-up and style your hair appropriately.

Auditions: Please wear a half top (stylish, embellished), bootie shorts and jazz shoes. We continue to promote a collegiate image. Wear make-up and style your hair appropriately. We encourage you to wear rhinestone stud earrings, but no other jewelry.

Application:

Applications are available online or you can apply on Saturday at the tryout clinic. There is a $20 application fee.

  • Tryout Application
  • $20 application fee
  • SMU participation waiver (available on the website) - if you are not 18 a parent/guardian must accompany you to auditions or sign the form before you arrive.
  • A full body photo of yourself in half top and bootie shorts, that will not be returned
  • Copy of your SMU Acceptance letter
  • Copy of insurance card
  • 2 letters of recommendation (one MUST be from a dance team director or studio director and include their contact information)
