The SMU Spirit Squads have traveled to destinations including Hawaii, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Tuscon, Arkansas, and Georgia. The squads attend the WAC and NCAA basketball tournaments. Additionally, the cheer squad has traveled to California to perform for Aaron Spelling and the casts of 90210, Melrose Place, and 7th Heaven.
The SMU Spirit Squads have made special appearances for the PGA and the late Payne Stewart, the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Burn, the Dallas Mavericks, Lonestar Park, and the Texas Motor Speedway. Appearances have also been made on behalf of benefits such as: the Mayor's Summer Reading Program, Pepsi Kid Around, and the North Texas Food Bank.
The Southern Methodist University Spirit Squad members are full-time students who dedicate their time, energy and athleticism to support Mustang Athletics. If you are looking for a nationally ranked school with an up and coming athletic program to cheer for…SMU is your place!
SMU is the birth place of modern cheerleading. Lawrence Herkimer who originated the pom-pom, the spirit stick, the Herkie jump, and founded the National Cheerleaders Association, is an SMU alumni cheerleader.
