Second Language Placement Tests

At SMU, in languages we use combinations of external test scores or placement tests to help determine undergraduate student enrollment.

Placement testing determines your current level of skills and knowledge in a particular language to help set you up for success. Prior to enrolling in a language course, you must either take a placement exam or, if your language of choice does not offer an exam, obtain permission from the Department of World Languages & Literatures.

Placement test details

Go to the Canvas Self-Enroll page and select “Placement Tests.” Enter your SMU ID number and “Search.” A blue “Enroll” button should appear – click and confirm your enrollment. Log into Canvas, and you will see the “Placement Tests” course added to your Canvas dashboard. Enter the course, and follow the directions to take your placement test.
