CLEP Testing

Current and prospective SMU students can earn course credit through CLEP testing.

The University Testing Center offers a full range of College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests for both SMU and non-SMU students.

How to register for CLEP testing

Register and pay for your CLEP test on the College Board website

Study guides are available for an additional fee. Print your completed registration form and bring it to your testing appointment along with an ID. Remote CLEP administrations are not conducted at the UTC.

All testing is done on campus, in person. Please review UTC’s testing policies and guidelines before test day.

Reserve your testing seat using the UTC Portal. The CLEP test administration fee is waived for current SMU students. Non-SMU students will pay a $35.00 administration fee at the time of appointment registration in addition to the testing fee paid to the College Board.

Bring a copy of your College Board CLEP Registration Form and a current photo ID to your testing appointment.

SMU students must provide their current SMU ID card as the official form of ID on test day.

Non-students must bring a current government-issued photo ID or a current student photo ID.

Helpful tips

  •  Make sure you register for the correct CLEP test.  Not all CLEP tests are accepted by SMU or other institutions.  If you select the wrong one, you will forfeit your testing fee.

  • Prepare for your test. Visit the CLEP website for study guides and free online CLEP courses at https//clep.collegeboard.org/prepare-for-an-exam/practice-for-the-exam

  • Bring your College Board CLEP registration form to the testing center. Your form contains an exam code that is required to launch your test after you arrive for your appointment.

  • A waiting period is required to retest. You may not repeat an exam of the same title within three months of the original testing date.

  • If you have testing accommodations, notify the testing center well in advance of your appointment. You must provide documentation required by the College Board.
