Research
- Externally Funded Research
Faculty members throughout SMU engage in cutting-edge research. Much of this research depends on, and is recognized by, external funding from federal, state, and foundation support. To support faculty members seeking external funding, SMU's Office of Research provides assistance in seeking grants, understanding compliance, and other matters relating to external funding.
- Research and Travel Grant Program of the University Research Council
The University Research Council is composed of faculty members from across the University and is chaired by the Associate Vice-President for Research. The URC oversees the Research and Travel Grant Program that is supported by the Fikes Foundation Endowment.
- Ford Research Fellowships
The Office of the Provost administers these awards on the basis of recommendations from the University Research Council. Supported by an endowment from SMU Trustee Gerald R. Ford, these competitive research awards help the University retain and reward outstanding scholars. The Ford Early Career Research Fellowships provide at least $10,000 per year for two years to help young faculty members establish their research programs. The Ford Research Fellowships provide summer stipends of $15,000 for up to four other faculty members.
- Support for National Fellowships and Awards
The Office of National Fellowships and Awards supports faculty members seeking competitive national fellowships and awards for research and/or teaching.
