James E. Quick
Dr. James E. Quick is the Associate Vice President for Research and
Dean of Graduate Studies at SMU. His responsibilities include guiding and supporting
SMU’s externally funded research initiatives, and serving as Dean for graduate studies
at SMU.

Dr. Quick holds a Ph.D. in Geology from the California Institute of Technology, a Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota, and a bachelor’s degree in geology from UCLA. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the Geological Society of America, and the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry. Immediately preceding his appointment as SMU’s Associate Vice President for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies, he was a noted volcano expert at the U.S. Geological Survey, serving as program coordinator of the Volcano Hazards Program at the US Geological Survey. This program researches volcanic processes and monitors all active volcanoes in the United States to provide early warning of eruptions. He also served as chief scientist, project chief, and staff geologist at the United States Geological Survey.
