James E. Quick, Associate Vice President for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies

Dr. James E. Quick is the Associate Vice President for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies at SMU. His responsibilities include guiding and supporting SMU’s externally funded research initiatives, and serving as Dean for graduate studies at SMU.  To visit the Office of Graduate Studies, click here.

About Dean Quick
Dr. Quick holds a Ph.D. in Geology from the California Institute of Technology, a Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota, and a bachelor’s degree in geology from UCLA. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the Geological Society of America, and the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry. Immediately preceding his appointment as SMU’s Associate Vice President for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies, he was a noted volcano expert at the U.S. Geological Survey, serving as program coordinator of the Volcano Hazards Program at the US Geological Survey. This program researches volcanic processes and monitors all active volcanoes in the United States to provide early warning of eruptions. He also served as chief scientist, project chief, and staff geologist at the United States Geological Survey.

Awards & Recognition
Dean Quick has published widely in numerous scientific journals over the last thirty years and maintains an active research agenda on magmatic processes. Since arriving at SMU he has joined the Dallas Council on Foreign Relations and looks forward to being involved in the Dallas community. His professional affiliations include the American Geophysical Union, Geological Society of America, and the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior.
