2004 TRENCHES PC 23 & 25

Week 1:

The first few weeks of excavation at Poggio Colla are always characterized by the excitement of the students to get immediately into the tasks of excavation, as well as the unfortunate necessity of removing the backfill from the previous seasons. Unfortunately at the end of each season we are forced to place the excavated dirt back into the trench in order to protect the unexcavated soil and also the exposed architecture. As a result we were forced to spend most of the first week exposing the soil we intend to excavate this season.

Removal of backfill from Trench PC 23 at the beginning of the season.

By the end of the first week we had removed all of the soil and begun our first excavation. We have decided to focus on the northeast corner of the trench, along with the western section of the trench. In past seasons we have discovered a number of interesting features in these areas which we will continue to explore. The western end of the trench produced an excellent record of the destruction of the third phase building atop the site along with very deep strata from the earliest phases of the site. In this area last season we excavated a number of finds associated with an early votive deposit. The pit associated with this votive deposit was then enclosed with a moulded podium block which may be from the earliest phases of the sites. We will conclude the excavation in this area with the lowest layers of the stratigraphy in this area.

Deep strata from the earliest phases of the site visible in trench.
