This week our official trench team began excavating together for the first time. Ben, Liz and Rachael all worked in the north locus of PC 27, where we are starting to see linear stone formations along the eastern scarp and a plethora of ceramic fragments in the western half. Unfortunately this locus is full of stumps, which always prove to be a hindrance in making a flat pass and determining stratigraphy. Tree stumps and roots like to wrap around walls and other important architectural features. Despite this obstacle, however, some of the stumps have already been removed and thrown off the side of the hill accompanied with a mandatory shout of relief. Most of the finds thus far have been fineware bases and rims, with an occasional black glaze vessel fragment.

On her own in the northeast locus of PC 22, Jess has excavated through a much earlier stratum. She found many large pieces of bone and teeth in a patch of soil that also contained burnt organic material. We believe this to be a votive deposit, possibly following some sort of sacrificial ritual.

We have had a good time this past week and I could not be happier with our team. I look forward to further excavation in PC 27 after the four-day break and completing all work in PC 19 and 22.
