The past two weeks have comprised of a lot of hard work along with getting acquainted with each other. Removing the backfill from last season was the most difficult chore. Strange as it may seem, after two months of removing dirt we throw it all back in at the end of each season to protect what remains in the trench. We then have to start each season by digging this back out with shovels which can be exhausting. However, it has been fun to meet everyone and get beyond the first few questions ("Where are you from?", "What's your major?", and "How did you hear about the site?" are all necessities). Now that everyone is settling in and getting the hang of excavation, everything is running smoothly. We have opened the northern locus of PC 27 but with slight delays-- a dirt pile from several seasons ago sat atop the trench without my knowledge and many days were spent trying to figure out what exactly this soil was. Despite this delay we have still managed to make up new catch phrases and enjoy the occasional dance to the local Italian radio station. I'm very happy with the effort all of our students have put in and look forward to beginning our assigned groups next week.
