2004 TRENCHES PC 24
& 26

Week 3:
Field Students:
Marie Hall
Kamissa Mort
Kelley Satarino
This week we have assigned students to
their permanent trenches. PC 24 and PC 26 now consists of Kamissa
Mort, Kelley Satarino and Marie Hall. Aaron Bartels is fulfilling
the duties of Assistant Trench Supervisor. We have two main goals
for this trench this season. We are first looking to determine
where the floor level of the building was when it was destroyed.
We are also intent on figuring out whether the space within this
trench served an interior or exterior function.

In the area of the trench which we are
currently excavating seems to be making a transition from destruction
rubble to the floor level of the building before its destruction.
We are beginning to see the remains of artifacts that would normally
have been associated with floor space. For example, in the northern
portion of the trench we are seeing a large amount of carbonized
(burned) seeds which appear to be associated with large fragments
of a pythos storage vessel. These vessel fragments oftentimes
have sides that have been severely burned as well. The seeds
are spread out over a large area in the trench as though they
may have spilled across a floor. Mixed in with these vessel fragments
and seeds, we often see large pieces of tile and large stones.
A falling tile or stone easily could have caused the breakage
of these large vessels.

Another interesting event in PC 26 was
the discovery of a large iron nail. This one is rather well preserved
and is not rusted to the point where we are unable to see its
true form. We can see the fact that the nail as a square shaft.
The head of the nail is still attached though the point may have
broken off. The conservators may be able to remove enough dirt
and other encrustation that we can get a very good look at an
ancient tool for construction.

We are starting to get into deeper and
uncharted levels in PC 26 now. The next few weeks should prove
to be very interesting. Hopefully, we will be able to gather
additional evidence to accomplish our excavation goals for this
season.
