2004 DIRECTORS' DIARIES
P. Gregory Warden
Michael Thomas
Week 2 - Michael Thomas:

Michael Thomas surveying
on Poggio Colla.
My season has been busy. In addition to
the odds and ends a director finds himself involved with, I have
become de facto site surveyor. Our architect Jess Galloway does
not show up until July 4th, so I have been running the total
station on my own. I will sleep better once he gets here and
confirms that the measurements are correct. We treated the students
to a field trip to the site of Poggio Civitate (Murlo) where
are friends and colleagues Eric Nielsen and Tony Tuck proved
to be gracious hosts. Tony toured us through the museum, magazzino,
and site. We also got a sneak peek at their impressive new site
database and catalog system.
Tony Tuck, Director of
excavations at Poggio Civitate, tours Poggio Colla
field school students through the museum in Murlo and up on the
site.
This year we have some changes on our staff.
We welcome back Professor Gretchen Meyers of Rollins College,
who will now work as the Director of Materials. Gretchen excavated
with us in 2001 when she was a graduate student at he University
of Texas. Gretchen plans to design a system that emphasizes a
more synthetic approach to our material. This system will be
very helpful as we begin to work with finds for the Podere Funghi
publication, and as we look to future study seasons. Gretchen
will be working with Bridget Marx, who will sadly be leaving
this year as she begins a new career as a curator at the Meadoows
Museum (although hopes to visit in the summers). Matt Coonan
has come on this year as our new housing manager. He will work
with our veteran Operations Manager, Larry Lehman, to make sure
that our project runs smoothly. Our excavation staff remains
essentially the same. Ivo van der Graaff, a graduate student
from the University of Amsterdam, will move up from assistant
to Trench Supervisor.
