Michael Thomas - Week 1:

Michael Thomas coordinating transportation for students on Poggio Colla.

This year marks our tenth season of excavation at Poggio Colla. Of course, it seems as if we just started. Ten years ago I had just started working on my Ph.D., and I came hear with little field experience. Now I have a great deal of experience, a Ph.D., and a several grey hairs. We have found a lot, and we understand a great deal about this site, but we have also raised as many questions as we have answered (this seems to be the case with many archaeological endeavors). Greg, my co-director, and I have set a goal to finish work here in ten more years, but that will take a monumental effort on our part. We will however initiate the first stage of major publication with a study season next year in the Podere Funghi. One thing I can say is that I am just as excited at the beginning of our tenth season as I was at the beginning of out first.

Above and below: Removing backfill from PC 23 and PC 20 to open the season.

As I write this we have already removed the backfill and begun work. This year we will focus our effort in two areas, the Podere Funghi and the acropolis of Poggio Colla. In the Podere Funghi we will complete most of our excavation this year and initiate a ceramic study during the last weeks of the season. The excavation will concentrate on the lower levels of the structure in that filed. On the top of the hill, we will continue in Trenches 19, 22, 23, 24, and 26. We will also re-open Trench PC 20, which we initially excavated during the 2000 season. This year's effort will hopefully add to our knowledge of the early history of the site. The work in PC 20 and 23 will explore some of earliest strata on the acropolis, strata that should reveal some clues as to how the site looked and functioned in the archaic period.
