2004 TRENCHES PF 5, 6, 9, & 14 Robert Belanger, Field Supervisor Brad Schneider, Assistant Field Supervisor Week 2: Jonathan Mort and Robert Belanger removing tile from PF 5. Original work clearing the ground outside of the lower stone feature in Trenches PF 9 and 14 was quickly undertaken after the units were fully cleared of last year's backfill. While a great deal of earth was excavated, little contextual material was actually collected as the soil was almost entirely sterile. After isolating the dimensions of the western foundation wall and determining that no lower coursing existed, attention turned towards similar work in Trench PF 6 to follow the lower stone feature. While two passes were taken through the opening level, the same characteristics developed outside of the line of the feature with almost entirely sterile soil. However, unlike Trench PF 9, Trench PF 6's lower stone feature seems to have disappeared (possibly into lower levels) and in its place is a darker packed line of granular sandstone. The deposition of these features and their stratigraphic relationship with one another is suggestive of a drain or earlier foundation wall. Further excavation will be required to verify this, though certain data points towards the former supposition.
