Week 5 Report 1998

Assistant Director of Field
Work and Field Supervisor, Michael Thomas
This week in Podere Funghi Unit 1 we
finally reached the unploughed strata in Locus 3. Once we reached
this point we were able to continue excavation in the dark soil
of stratum 2a. Excavation in this stratum produced numerous important
finds including several profiles of Hellenistic fine ware, as
well as some interesting fragments of coarse ware. One of the
highlights was a full profile of a fine ware chalice, including
the stem. We continue to find highly vitrified pottery fragments.
Although we have found evidence of a structure, such as roof
tiles and mud brick, we have still not found any evidence of
architectural foundation.
The photographs below show Unit PF 1
