Personal Security Tips

  • At all times, be alert and aware of your surroundings

  • Carry a whistle or noise maker - do not be afraid to scream if you need help

  • Use a help phone or raise the hood and stay in your car if it breaks down. If someone stops, ask them to call the police

Property Security Tips

  • Do not leave your valuables unattended - even for a moment
  • Never leave belongings in plain view in your car - lock them in the trunk
  • Register, engrave, mark, and/or photograph your valuables with your license number
  • Register your bike with Vehicle Registration and Parking Control
  • Keep your vehicle locked when it is parked and when you drive
  • Consider installing anti-theft or alarm devices on your vehicle
  • Secure the work area when you are away
  • Report any stolen items to the SMU Police Department immediately

Residential Security Tips

  • Have your keys ready to unlock your car or residence and enter quickly
  • Don't let strangers and non-residents enter buildings with your access
  • Call 9-1-1 if you see someone in the building who you think does not belong
  • Lock your dorm room or apartment whenever you leave and when you are sleeping
  • Do not prop open exterior card reader doors
  • Do not allow strangers to follow you into the building
