050765  2:26 PM:  Criminal Mischief:  The gate arm at the Owens Lot was damaged by unknown persons.  Open.

050766  7:05 AM:  Burglary of a Building:  A contractor working on the Dedman Center construction site reported that someone entered a secured room and stole a toolbox and several power tools.  The burglary occurred sometime between 05/31/05 at 5:30 PM and 06/01/05 at 6:20 AM.  Open.

050767  10:31 AM:  Medical Call:  Officers and UP EMS responded to a medical call in the Moody Coliseum involving a cheer camp participant.  Closed.

050768  12:17 PM:  Harassment:  A female student reported that a male student is harassing her by telephone and text messaging.  Open.

050769  3:00 PM:  Theft - MB ($50-499):  A staff member reported someone stole electronic equipment from her office in Peyton Hall.  Open.

050770  11:52 AM:  Motor Vehicle Accident:  Officers responded to a motor vehicle accident in the West Quad lot involving a student and a non-affiliated woman. Closed.

June 3

050772  12:40 PM:  Assist Other Agency:  Officers assisted UPPD with a motor vehicle accident which occurred in the 6200 block of Airline Road.  Closed.

050773  2:40 PM:  Fire Alarm:  Officers and UPFD responded to a fire alarm in the Fondren Science Building.  Magnesium was being used during a heated experiment causing the smoke detector to activate.  Closed.


June 4

050774  10:15 AM:  Assault - Class C:  A non-affiliated woman and a non-affiliated man were involved in an altercation while running on the Westscott Field track.  Open.

050775 3:38 PM:  Medical Call:  Officers and UP EMS responded to a medical call in Selecman Hall involving a non-affiliated man.  Closed.

050776  4:58 PM:  Medical Call:  Officers and UP EMS responded to a medical call in the Moody Coliseum involving a cheer camp participant.  Closed.

050778  2:20 AM:  Possession of Fictitious License or ID:  During a traffic stop, a student was found in possession of a counterfeit ID.  Judicial Referral.

050779  3:46 PM:  Possession of Fictitious License or ID:  A wallet belonging to a student was turned in to the police department.  The wallet contained a counterfeit ID.  Judicial Referral.


June 6

050780  2:41 AM:  Fire:  Officers and UPPD responded to a report of smoke inside the Loyd All Sport Center.  The display lighting near the man entrance malfunctioned causing a burning odor.  The lights were turned off until the problem can be repaired.  Closed.

050781  9:12 AM:  Theft - MB ($50-499):  A student reported someone stole her bicycle from the bike rack at the Perkins Natatorium.  Open.

050782  12:39 PM:  Theft - MC (Less than $50):  A juvenile attending a camp stole several batteries from the Market Place in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center.  The property was recovered, and the juvenile was released to his parent.  Closed.

050783  2:31 PM:  Criminal Mischief:  A student reported someone damaged the trunk of his car sometime between 06/05/05 at 8:00 pm and 06/06/05 at 2:00 pm.  Open.

050784  4:06 PM:  Fire Alarm:  Officers and UPFD responded to a fire alarm in the Lawyer's Inn in the Carr Collins Building.  The alarm activated when the grill was used without the vent-a-hood being properly open.  Closed.


June 7

050785  2:29 PM:  Fire Alarm:  Officers responded to a fire alarm at Shuttles Hall.  The alarm activated when a sprinkler head was accidentally damaged by contractors working in the building.  Closed.

050786  12:49 AM:  Outstanding Warrants:  A student was stopped for a traffic violation in the 6000 block of Bishop Boulevard.  The student has an outstanding warrant.  Judicial Referral.

050787 11:34 AM: Administrative Information Report: Groundskeepers, working on a landscaping project on the south side of Perkins Chapel, uncovered a buried container filled with what appeared to be the decomposed flesh of an unknown vertebrate.  Investigators and the Medical Examiners office responded and recovered the container for examination.   The remains were determined to be that of a small animal.  Closed

050788  12:33 PM:  Fire Alarm:  Officers and UPFD responded to a fire alarm in Collins Hall.  Investigation revealed someone burned popcorn in the microwave causing the alarm to activate.  Closed.

050789  2:10 PM:  Fire:  Officers responded to a fire call at the Bridwell Library.  Painting contractors were using a heating device to remove paint from exterior window frames, which caused a small portion of the frame to ignite.  The flame was extinguished prior to arrival by police.  No damage was observed.  Closed. 

050790  2:27 PM:  Sick or Injured Person:  Officers and UP EMS responded to a medical call at Snider Hall involving a student.  Closed.

050791  9:15 PM:  Fire Alarm:  Officers and UPFD responded to a fire alarm at Virginia Hall.  Investigation revealed someone burned popcorn in the microwave causing the alarm to activate.  Officers provided a fire safety briefing prior to allowing occupants entry into the building.  Closed.


June 9

050792  1:17 AM:  Field Interview:  An officer observed a suspicious vehicle in the area of the construction site.  Due to recent thefts in the area, the officer made contact with the driver who said he needed directions.  Information was provided, and the non-affiliated driver was told to leave campus.  Closed. 

050793  2:11 AM:  Field Interview:  An officer observed four men urinating in the bushes in the 6000 block of Bishop Boulevard.  The men were identified as visitors attending a class on campus.  The men were counseled on their conduct and released.  Closed. 

050794  10:08 AM:  Motor Vehicle Accident:  A student and a staff member were involved in a motor vehicle accident in the Hamon Lot.   Open.

050795  7:01 PM:  Sick or Injured Person:  Officers and UP EMS responded to a medical call in the 6400 block of University involving a non-affiliated man.  Closed.

050796  7:35 PM:  Field Interview:  An officer made contact with a non-affiliated man loitering in the lobby of the Bob Hope Theater during an event involving young female dancers.  The man was identified and departed campus.  Closed.


June 10

050797  1:17 AM:  Field Interview:  An officer observed a suspicious vehicle near the Boaz Lot.  Officers made contact with the driver and passenger, who were identified as students.  The students used profanity during the contact.  Judicial Referral.

050798  9:50 AM:  Assault:  A student reported he was assaulted by a staff member in the Moody Parking Garage.  The student declined to pursue criminal charges. Closed.

050799  10:26 AM:  Suspicious Person:  A student reported an unknown man approached him in the Umphrey Lee parking lot and asked for help with his car.  The student agreed to help the man, who then entered the student’s car.  The man attempted to scam the student into giving him money. The student became suspicious and dropped the man off at the flagpole on Bishop Boulevard.   Also see report 050800.  A Campus Alert was issued and posted on July 10, 2005 to warn everyone about this scam.  Open.

050800  10:51 AM:  Assist Other Agency:  Officers assisted UPPD with an off campus theft.  A SMU student reported to police that an unknown man followed him out of the 7-Eleven on Hillcrest Ave and stole money from him after attempting a scam.  The student was not harmed in this incident. Also see report 050799.  A Campus Alert was issued and posted on July 10, 2005 to warn everyone about this scam.

Crime Prevention TipBe extremely cautious when approached by a stranger who asks for assistance or money.  Refer them to the police for help.  Do not give a stranger a ride.  If approached by a stranger, walk away immediately and call police.

050801  3:51 PM:  Vehicle Accident:  Two non-affiliated persons were involved in a vehicle accident in the 5900 block of Bishop Boulevard.  The driver’s exchanged insurance information.  Closed.

050802  8:22 AM:  Sick or Injured Person:  Officers and UP EMS responded to a medical call in the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports involving a cheer camp participant.  Closed.


June 11

050803  4:47 AM:  Public Intoxication/Outstanding Warrants:  A student was found sleeping in the basement of the Fincher Building.  He was intoxicated.  The student also had an outstanding warrant for Public Intoxication.  The student was arrested and transported to the UP Jail.  Closed.

050804  1:31 PM:  Vehicle Accident:  A student and a football camp participant were involved in a vehicle accident in the 6000 block of Bishop Boulevard.  The drivers exchanged insurance information.  Closed.

050805  1:26 PM:  Fire Alarm:  Officers and UPFD responded to a fire alarm in Perkins Hall.  A smoke detector on the 3rd floor activated.  No cause for the activation was determined.  Closed.

050806  7:33 PM:  Suspicious Person:  Officers responded to a report of a man sitting in the high rafters of the Bob Hope Theater during a dance competition.  Officers located and identified the non-affiliated man. The man was escorted from the building.  Closed.


June 12

050807  12:25 AM:  Sick or Injured Person:  An officer responded to a medical call in Boaz Hall involving a cheer camp participant.  Closed.

050808  2:16 AM:  Public Lewdness/Criminal Trespass Warning:  Officers observed a man and woman in a state of undress inside a vehicle in the 3000 block of Binkley Avenue. The officer determined the non-affiliated man and woman were involved in a consensual intimate relationship.   Each was issued a criminal trespass warning.  Closed.


June 13

050809  10:00 AM:  Emergency Evacuation Exercise:  Officers and a member of Fire Safety conducted an exercise at the Dawson Service Center.  Closed.

050810  5:35 PM:  Vehicle Accident:  Two non-affiliated men were involved in a motor vehicle accident in the 5700 block of Bishop Boulevard.  Officers responded and identified both men.  While officers were obtaining information for the report, one men fled the scene in his vehicle (see report 050811).  Closed.

050811  5:37 PM:  Evading Arrest or Detention:  A non-affiliated man fled the scene of an accident after being identified by officers.  Officers initiated a vehicle pursuit, but terminated the pursuit in the interest of public safety.  The suspect's identity, as well as his vehicle information, was obtained.  Criminal charges will be filed against the suspect.  Closed.

050812  9:28 AM:  Emergency Evacuation Exercise:  Officers and a member of Fire Safety conducted an exercise at McFarlin Auditorium.  Closed.

050813  8:53 AM:  Theft - MB ($50-499):  A staff member reported someone stole a television from the first floor lobby of Peyton Hall.  Open.

050814  9:18 AM:  Emergency Evacuation Exercise:  Officers and a member of Fire Safety conducted an exercise at the Perkins Administration Building.  Closed.

050815  11:33 PM:  Disturbance (Non-Criminal):  Officers responded to a man and woman shouting at each other near the Junkins Parking lot.  Officers made contact with the non-affiliated man and woman who said they were having an argument regarding a personal matter.  The man and woman are attending a camp on campus and were released.  Closed.


June 16

050816  1:17 AM:  Administrative Information Report A cab was stopped in the 5800 block of Bishop Boulevard for a traffic violation.  Two female passengers in the cab were upset because the driver could not locate their residence.  The two non-affiliated women were provided with an escort to their residence by officers.  Officers contacted the cab company to report the incident involving the cab driver.  Closed.

050817  10:04 AM:  Assist Other Agency:  Officers assisted Irving PD with an investigation involving a missing juvenile.  The juvenile was not found on the SMU campus.  Closed.

050818  12:06 PM:  Suspicious Person:  Officers responded to a report of a suspicious man sitting in the 5900 block of Bishop Boulevard.  The man was later located at Boaz Hall.  Officers identified the man as non-affiliated.  The man told officers he was homeless and hungry.  Officers issued the man a criminal trespass warning and directed the man to the nearest homeless shelter.  The man departed campus.  Closed.


June 17

050819  9:43 AM:  Theft - MB ($50-499):  A non-affiliated woman reported someone stole her camera from a classroom in the Owens Art Center.  Open.

050820  1:29 PM:  Theft - MB ($50-499):  A non-affiliated woman reported someone stole her bicycle from the bicycle rack by the Umphrey Lee Center.  The bicycle was left unsecured.  Open.

050821  3:20 PM:  False Report to a Peace Officer:  SMU PD Communications received an anonymous report of a fight in progress at the Cinco Center.  Officers responded and met with a staff member at the location who reported no fight occurred at the Cinco Center.  Open.

050822  8:18 PM:  Theft - MC (Less than $50):  A law school student reported someone stole his book satchel from a room in Florence Hall.  The satchel was later found by GCA cleaning personnel in a restroom in Florence Hall.  No property was stolen.  This case is UNFOUNDED.

050823  10:39 PM:  Tampering with Fire Protection Systems (Fire Extinguisher)/Fire Alarm:  Officers responded to a fire alarm in Snider Hall.  Investigation revealed that someone intentionally discharged a fire extinguisher without cause which activated the fire alarm system in the building.  Open.

050824  7:35 PM:  Theft - MB ($50-499):  Two non-affiliated women reported someone stole their personal property from the Greer Garson Theater.  Two wallets, a purse, credit cards, a cell phone and $40 in cash were stolen.  The property was left unattended in an unsecured dressing room.  The two wallets, purse and credit cards were later turned in to the SMUPD by GCA cleaning personnel who found the property inside the Umphrey Lee Center.  The $40 is unrecovered.  Open.


June 20

050825  10:19 AM:  Suspicious Person:  A caller reported a man was soliciting money from persons parking in the Meadows Parking Garage.  Officers searched the area, but did not locate the man.  Closed.

050826  12:17 PM:  Assist other Agency:  Officers assisted UP Fire Department in the University Gardens Apartment complex.  An apartment on Chalet Court had a small fire in the kitchen.  The fire was extinguished by the resident prior to the arrival of officers.  Closed.

050827  4:51 PM:  Theft Class B ($50-$499):  A non-affiliated man reported a DVD player stolen from a light booth inside Greer Garson Theater at Owens Art Center.  Open.

050828  11:17AM:  Theft Class C (Less than $50):  A student reported her wallet was stolen in the Fondren Library.  The wallet was unattended at the time of the theft.  Closed.

050829  4:05 PM:  Criminal Mischief/Failure to Leave ID:  A student reported someone damaged her car while parked in the 3000 block of Binkley Ave.  The hood of the car was scratched with a sharp object and the drivers side door had been struck by another car.  Closed.

050830  5:05 PM:  Theft Class B ($50-$499):  A non-affiliated man reported someone stole clothing items from a locker room at the Barr Pool.  Closed.

050831  1:08 PM:  Emergency Evacuation Exercise:  An exercise was conducted at the Memorial Health Center with an evacuation time of one minute and eight seconds.  Closed.

050832  1:01 AM:  Assist Other Agency:  SMU Officers assisted UPPD with a vehicle burglary investigation in the University Gardens Apartments.  The car owner is a student.  Closed.

050833  9:12 AM:  Assault:  A student reported he was assaulted by another student on January 26, 2005 in Dallas Hall.  The student said the two have had issues since this incident.  Judicial Referral/Open.

050834  11:03 AM:  Harassment:  A staff member reported an acquaintance has been harassing her by telephone after being told not to make contact with her.  Open.

050835  12:15 PM:  Vehicle Accident:  A staff member reported a minor accident in the Meadows Museum parking garage.  The persons involved exchanged information.  Closed.

050836  9:33 AM:  Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle/Criminal Mischief:  A construction worker reported someone operated a Snorkel Lift in the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports construction area causing damage to the structure.  The vehicle was used without permission.  Open.

050837  12:46 AM:  Sick or Injured Person:  Officers responded to a medical call at Shuttles hall involving a basketball camp member..  Closed.

050838  1:27 AM:  Theft - Class B ($50-$499):  A staff member reported the theft of personal belongings from his backpack.  The backpack was left unsecured in a basement closet inside the OFAC.  Open.

050839  12:55 PM:  Theft - Class B ($50-$499):  A faculty member reported the theft of  two computer speakers from her office inside the OFAC.  The theft occurred between 6/25/05 and 6/27/05.  Open.

050840  3:24 PM:  Theft - Class A ($500-$1499):  Two non-affiliated individuals reported the theft of their purses from an unsecured area in the OFAC.  Open.

050842  9:45 AM:  Fire Alarm:   Officers and UP Fire Department responded to the Alpha Psi Lambda house to investigate a fire alarm.  The alarm panel indicated a pull station activated on the second floor.  The cause of the alarm could not be determined.  Closed.
